Job Title: Hospital Specimen Technician
Location: Chicago, IL, 60616
Contract Duration: 3 Months
Schedule: Monday – Saturday | 40 Hours/Week | Central Time Zone
Job Summary:
  • The Hospital Specimen Technician is responsible for preparing, processing, and managing patient specimens within a hospital laboratory environment. This role requires strong specimen handling knowledge, data entry accuracy, customer service skills, and the ability to follow laboratory procedures and compliance requirements. The technician serves as a liaison between hospital staff and the laboratory while ensuring timely and accurate specimen processing.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform specimen preparation, processing, and test send-out activities.
  • Follow specimen requirements, test ordering policies, and laboratory procedures.
  • Utilize Hospital LIS systems and laboratory software for specimen tracking and processing.
  • Perform remote accessioning (pre-accessioning) and maintain specimen records.
  • Print laboratory testing reports and monitor specimen flow/tracking data.
  • Troubleshoot specimen issues, missing information, additional sample requests, and test cancellations.
  • Manage laboratory supply ordering processes.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between hospital staff and laboratory personnel.
  • Handle inbound calls and provide exceptional customer service.
  • Communicate testing, billing, and specimen-related requirements effectively.
 
Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 1–3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Strong data entry skills (ability to enter 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Detail-oriented, punctual, and adaptable.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Medical or clinical laboratory background.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Previous hospital laboratory experience.
  • Experience with Hospital LIS systems.
 
Additional Requirements:
  • COVID-19 Vaccination Card required.
  • Hospital credentialing required.
  • Ability to work in a biohazard environment while following safety protocols.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
