Mission or Goal of Unit:
Chief Purpose of this position: VCU Health CommunityMemorial Hospital is a small, rural community hospital that provides a widerange of care of subspecialty care to a large region. In 2017, VCU HealthSystem built a beautiful, brand-new hospital that is both aesthetically andclinically spectacular. This facility includes 54 beds on three med-surgfloors, a 10-bed ICU, 6 labor and delivery beds, and 16 emergency departmentbeds. The current primary service area is around 80,000 people and includes Mecklenburg,Lunenburg, and Brunswick Counties with a secondary service area extending intoNorth Carolina. Because of the high-quality care provide at the facility, the dailycensus is growing with a median of about 54 patients and a range up to 74patients. The EMR is Epic.
Position Responsibilities:
Schedule
Hospitaliststypically work a 7 on, 7 off model of 12-hour shifts. During the week, twophysicians and two APPs round with a shift start time of 7 AM. Providersalternate in a round-and-go model with at least one provider staying until 7PM. An admitter comes in a 10 AM and works until 10 PM. The night providercomes in at 7 PM and works until 7 AM. On the weekends, the admitter become arounder, and there are no APPs and no admitter; the physicians admit in roundrobin fashion. Approximately one week in twelve is night coverage. Mediancensus per physician team is 14 patients. Median number of day admissions is8.5, and median number of night admissions is 6.
PatientLoad
Thepatients are 100% inpatient with an open ICU. Median census per physician teamis 14 patients. Median number of day admissions is 8.5, and median number ofnight admissions is 6. On-site consultation is available frompulmonary/critical care, cardiology, surgery, and anesthesia. Otherconsultation can be sought from subspecialists at VCU Medical Center inRichmond but may require the patient be transferred.
Procedures
Hospitalistsrarely perform procedures, but comfort with central lines is preferred.Providers from surgery and anesthesia perform most procedures. Codes are run byhospitalists and emergency medicine providers.
Teaching
Aspart of the new family medicine residency in South Hill, physician willregularly supervise second- and third-year residents. Faculty are expected toprovide typical supervision, train these residents on the care of adult inpatients,and complete evaluation and feedback of the residents.
