Examples Of Duties

This position provides assistance to the school nurse in routine health services and performs a variety of clerical activities at designated school/building site.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Performs a variety of clerical activities in the health room, as directed.

  2. Maintains and updates student health records, including emergency contact telephone information, and other pertinent data especially for students with special health needs; prepares various reports, as requested.

  3. Maintains log of students entering the health center; updates, on the computer, immunization information on each student in the building.

  4. Reviews immunization records and contacts parents or guardians to contribute to immunization law compliance for each student; maintains a complete and signed Certificate of Immunization Status (CIS) or Certificate of Exemption (COE) for each student on file or online.

  5. Assists in the care of ill and injured students in accordance with established District and Health Services guidelines; refers complex problems to the principal or designated school nurse; recognizes situations that need emergency medical services.

  6. Administers medication and completes delegated tasks for students depending on need, such as, G-tube feeds and clean intermittent catherization, with annual training by school nurse.

  7. May discuss health concerns and/or requirements with the family or guardian for additional follow-up with the student's physician.

  8. Assists in maintaining stock for health and supply rooms to ensure organization and proper inventory of materials; distributes supplies to classrooms, as directed.

  9. Assists in the annual health screening and follow-up activities; under the guidance of the designated school nurse.

  10. Treats all information and records in a confidential manner.

OTHER JOB DUTIES

  1. Maintains and updates knowledge and skills necessary for success in the position by participating in professional development activities.

  2. Attends staff meetings and in-service programs, as directed.

  3. May manage special projects and performs related duties, as assigned, on a temporary basis.

  4. Regular, reliable, predictable attendance or physical presence is an essential job requirement and critical to the performance of the work.

CONDITIONS

Experiences frequent interruptions; required to work with, and defuse, if appropriate, difficult and sensitive situations and/or people; required to work extended hours; required to travel to District sites; may be exposed to infectious diseases; may be required to lift and carry up to 20 pounds, run, bend, squat, stoop, kneel, crouch, walk, twist, climb, and/or be mobile.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

High school graduation or equivalent and experience in working with young people and parents, preferably in a health-related field; or any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work.

Licenses/Special Requirements

Valid Washington State driver's license.

Must possess, or required to obtain first aid certificate and CPR card by first day of employment.

Fingerprints and successful WSP and FBI background clearance/sexual misconduct clearance.

District training, as required, to perform duties of the position.

Allowable Substitution

Equivalent combination of education and experience will be evaluated by the Human Resources Department for comparability.
