People & Organizational HR Assistant (HR Assistant)

Our client, a respected nonprofit organization, is seeking a detail-oriented and people-focused HR Assistant to join their Human Resources team. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career HR professional looking to build hands-on experience across all aspects of the employee lifecycle while contributing to a mission-driven organization.
Reporting directly to the People & Organizational Culture Director, this role provides administrative and operational support in recruiting, onboarding, benefits administration, employee relations, policy administration, and HR compliance. The ideal candidate is organized, adaptable, customer-service oriented, and passionate about creating a positive employee experience.

Position Details
  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm, or 8am-4:30pm (40 hours/week)
  • Location: Southwest Portland (100% Onsite)
  • Duration: Temporary with strong potential for permanent hire
  • Compensation: $22.50 - $25.00 per hour, depending on experience
Key Responsibilities
Recruitment & Hiring
  • Post and manage job openings across recruitment platforms
  • Coordinate candidate interviews and scheduling
  • Participate in interview processes as needed
  • Conduct reference checks
  • Maintain communication with candidates throughout the hiring process
Onboarding & Offboarding
  • Prepare offer letters, onboarding materials, and benefits packets
  • Facilitate new hire orientation and onboarding activities
  • Coordinate and conduct exit interviews
  • Complete termination paperwork and offboarding checklists
Human Resources Administration
  • Maintain employee personnel files and HR records
  • Update employee directories and contact information
  • Process employment verification requests and unemployment claims
  • Coordinate employee name tags, parking, and transit programs
  • Perform HR data entry, tracking, and reporting functions
Policy & Compliance
  • Respond to employee questions regarding HR policies and procedures
  • Assist with updates to the Employee Handbook and HR forms
  • Support compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws
  • Help maintain accurate HR documentation and records
Qualifications
Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
Required Skills & Experience
  • Previous Human Resources, administrative, or office support experience
  • Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion
  • Flexible, adaptable, and able to manage multiple priorities
  • Strong customer-service mindset and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
