People & Organizational HR Assistant (HR Assistant)

Our client, a respected nonprofit organization, is seeking a detail-oriented and people-focused HR Assistant to join their Human Resources team. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career HR professional looking to build hands-on experience across all aspects of the employee lifecycle while contributing to a mission-driven organization.
Reporting directly to the People & Organizational Culture Director, this role provides administrative and operational support in recruiting, onboarding, benefits administration, employee relations, policy administration, and HR compliance. The ideal candidate is organized, adaptable, customer-service oriented, and passionate about creating a positive employee experience.
Position Details
- Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm, or 8am-4:30pm (40 hours/week)
- Location: Southwest Portland (100% Onsite)
- Duration: Temporary with strong potential for permanent hire
- Compensation: $22.50 - $25.00 per hour, depending on experience
Key Responsibilities
Recruitment & Hiring
- Post and manage job openings across recruitment platforms
- Coordinate candidate interviews and scheduling
- Participate in interview processes as needed
- Conduct reference checks
- Maintain communication with candidates throughout the hiring process
Onboarding & Offboarding
- Prepare offer letters, onboarding materials, and benefits packets
- Facilitate new hire orientation and onboarding activities
- Coordinate and conduct exit interviews
- Complete termination paperwork and offboarding checklists
Human Resources Administration
- Maintain employee personnel files and HR records
- Update employee directories and contact information
- Process employment verification requests and unemployment claims
- Coordinate employee name tags, parking, and transit programs
- Perform HR data entry, tracking, and reporting functions
Policy & Compliance
- Respond to employee questions regarding HR policies and procedures
- Assist with updates to the Employee Handbook and HR forms
- Support compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws
- Help maintain accurate HR documentation and records
Qualifications
Preferred
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field
- Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
Required Skills & Experience
- Previous Human Resources, administrative, or office support experience
- Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion
- Flexible, adaptable, and able to manage multiple priorities
- Strong customer-service mindset and interpersonal skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, and Excel
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
