Now Hiring: HR Generalist - Schott Distributing | Rochester, MN
Schott Distributing Co., a beverage wholesale distributor based in Rochester, MN, is looking for an experienced HR Generalist to lead our human resources function. This is a hands-on role with real ownership, ideal for someone who wants to make a direct impact on how we hire, support, and retain our people.
 
What You'll Do
You'll manage the full scope of HR for our organization, from strategy to day-to-day support:
 
HR Strategy & Policy
• Develops, recommends, and implements personnel policies and procedures; prepares and maintains the employee handbook; performs annual review and revision as necessary.
• Recommends new approaches, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvements in efficiency of HR department and services performed.
• Rewrites job descriptions as necessary; administers and monitors the performance evaluation program and revises as necessary.
 
Leave & Compliance Management
• Administers and tracks leaves such as FMLA, Minnesota Paid Family & Medical Leave (MN PFML), ADA accommodations, and STD/LTD concurrent leave, including compliance milestones, deadlines, and employee notifications.
• Researches and applies applicable federal and state employment law requirements to ensure ongoing organizational compliance.
 
HR Systems & Infrastructure
• Maintains employee data and workflows in Paycor HRIS/Payroll system
• Develops and maintains reference tools and internal HR resources for consistent policy application across the organization.
• Participates in staff meetings; maintains company organization charts and employee directory.
 
DOT / FMCSA Compliance
• Supports DOT/FMCSA compliance as it relates to the hiring process and ongoing employment of commercial drivers, including coordination of pre-employment and random drug and alcohol screening.
• Maintains Driver Qualification Files (DQFs) in accordance with FMCSA regulations, ensuring required documentation is collected, current, and retained per applicable recordkeeping and retention standards.
 
Safety & Worker’s Compensation
• Oversees the workers’ compensation program, including claim intake and communication with insurance carrier, employees, and management throughout the claims process.
• Supports workplace safety initiatives and OSHA recordkeeping requirements, ensuring incidents are documented, reported, and followed up on in a timely manner.
• Assists in maintaining SDS books and Company Safety Plan
 
Talent Acquisition & Workforce Development
• Leads full-cycle recruiting for all positions including job description development, job postings, interview guide creation, and candidate evaluation.
• Conducts new-employee orientations, employee relations counseling, and exit interviewing.
• Controls interviewing, hiring, and training of employees; provides feedback for performance appraisals; rewards and disciplines employees; addresses complaints and resolves problems.
 
Workforce & Employee Communications
• Controls employee time off program and assists in scheduling.
• Drafts and distributes employee-facing communications including announcements, policy updates, program introductions, and recognition content.
• Develops and manages social media and external communications related to workforce branding, company culture, employee recognition, and community engagement (e.g., Folds of Honor, distributor scholarship programs).
 
Benefits Administration
• Performs benefits administration including claims initiation and resolution, change reporting, and invoice approval.
 
Administrative Support
• Assists the accounting department by checking in delivery driver payments and preparing the deposit in AM and PM.
• Provides back-up to administrative assistants, including answering company phones.
• Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned.
 
Your Schedule
  • Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Full-time, salary-exempt position
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree with 2+ years of HR experience, or 5+ years in the HR field
  • HR certification (SHRM-CP/SCP or PHR/SPHR) preferred
  • Strong knowledge of employment law and compliance requirements
  • Excellent communication, judgment, and attention to detail
  • Comfortable managing a broad and varied scope independently
