Summary

A cashier plays a crucial role in the smooth operation of a retail establishment, restaurant, or any business that involves monetary transactions. Their primary responsibility is to handle customer payments, process purchases, and provide excellent customer service accurately and efficiently. Cashiers are responsible for calculating the total amount due, issuing receipts, and giving change when necessary. The Cashier will always conduct him/herself in a manner that supports the Core Values of Hyatt Hotels: Empathy, Experimentation, Inclusion, Integrity, Respect, Wellbeing

They also often operate cash registers, credit card terminals, and other payment processing equipment. In addition to these core duties, cashiers may also answer customer inquiries, assist with returns or exchanges, and maintain a clean and organized checkout area.

Attention to detail, strong math skills, and excellent communication are essential traits for success in this role, as cashiers are often the final point of contact between the business and its customers.

Qualifications

Essential job FUNCTIONS:

• Accurately and securely handle cash, checks, credit/debit payments.

• Generating and providing receipts for customers' purchases, as well as documenting any returns or exchanges in accordance with company policies.

• Scanning or manually entering product barcodes, totaling purchases, and processing transactions efficiently through cash registers or point-of-sale (POS) systems.

• Ensuring that the cash register or POS system is in good working order, including changing receipt paper, resolving minor technical issues, and reporting any significant problems to management.

• Carefully bagging customers' purchases to prevent damage and ensuring that items are properly accounted for.

• Having a basic understanding of the products or services offered by the business to assist customers with product inquiries and suggestions.

• Monitoring for potential theft or fraudulent activities, such as checking bills for counterfeit currency and following established security protocols.

• Balancing cash drawers at the end of each shift to ensure that the amount of money taken in matches the recorded transactions.

• Being vigilant and aware of security risks, such as fraudulent transactions or suspicious customer behavior, and reporting any concerns to management or security personnel.

• South Carolina ServSafe Alcohol Certification (or ability to obtain upon hire) required.

The colleague is held accountable for all duties of this job and other duties as assigned.

Experience & Education:

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Basic math skills to accurately handle money and make change.
• Previous cash handling experience is preferred but not required.
• Previous Hotel or Resort experience desired.

Job REQUIRMENTS:

• Must be authorized to work in the United States
• Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
• Strong attention to detail.
• You must have a valid driver's license and good driving record.
• Must be able to lift 20 pounds or more.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

While performing the duties of this job, the Colleague is regularly required to walk, stand, and sit. Cashiers typically spend their shifts standing behind a cash register or counter, often in a climate-controlled indoor environment such as a retail store, supermarket, restaurant, or gas station. They interact with a diverse range of customers throughout the day, which can be both rewarding and challenging. Cashiers may work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to accommodate the needs of the business.
