The Human Resources Manager is responsible for leading and overseeing all aspects of the organization's human resources function to support a high-performing, engaged and inclusive workforce. This role focuses on talent acquisition, onboarding, employee relations, training and development, performance management, compensation and benefits administration, compliance and succession planning. The position plays a key role in aligning people strategies with organizational goals by fostering employee engagement, strengthening workplace culture and ensuring HR practices support business objectives. Partners closely with leadership and cross-functional teams to develop strategic workforce initiatives, manage internship and contractor programs, ensure compliance with employment laws and HR best practices, and support the organization's long-term success.

Salary – $80,000.00 - $90,000.00 DOE

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Management, or related field.
  • PHR or SHRM-CP preferred; SPHR or SHRM-SCP highly desirable.
  • Eight or more years of HR related experience. 
  • Experience overseeing core HR functions such as recruitment, benefits administration, compensation, employee relations, and compliance.
  • Proficient with HRIS systems and a variety of office administration tools.
  • Previous experience working in nonprofit, journalism, and/or public media organizations.
  • Proven ability to build relationships across all levels of an organization and influence leadership decisions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Typical Duties
  • Collaborates directly with employees and leadership to address questions, clarify policies, resolve concerns, and support organizational priorities and operational needs.
  • Administers benefits programs to include, but not limited to enrollments, COBRA, change reporting, approving invoices for payment, and annual re-evaluation of policies.
  • Manages leave administration to encompass Family Medical Leave case management, workers compensation, transitional duty or any other personal leave requests. 
  • Develops, implements, and leads effective hiring, onboarding and separation processes, including job posting development, recruiting, interviewing, new hire orientation and exit interviews.
  • Provides practical support and guidance in complex staffing matters, including workforce shortages, employee relations concerns, conflict resolution, disciplinary actions, and separation processes.  
  • Supervises Payroll Specialist and ensures personnel changes are properly documented and submitted in a timely manner; serves as backup to Payroll Specialist, processing payroll as needed.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations to include preparation of Equal Employment Opportunity annual reporting, Affordable Care Act reports, and any unemployment claims.  
  • Coordinates and leads labor and employee relations efforts; including contract administration, grievance resolution, participating in labor negotiations and fosters productive labor-management relationships.
  • Manages contractor onboarding processes, including agreements, compliance documentation, orientation, system access, and coordination with internal teams.   
  • Develops and executes annual performance review cycle.   
  • Develops and facilitates engaging employee development programs and training sessions covering compliance, professional skills, leadership development, and workplace effectiveness.
  • Maintains employee personnel files, conducts ongoing file audits and manages HR platforms.  
  • Creates employee handbooks, policies, and related resources tailored to organizational structure, workforce demographics, business operations, geographic requirements, and company culture.
  • Supports leadership development and succession planning.  
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.
  • Performs other duties, tasks and special projects as assigned.
