HVAC Controls Design Engineer
Washington, DC Metro Area | Full Time

Overview: We're looking for a Controls Design Engineer to join our growing Building Automation team in the Washington, DC metro area. This is an office-based role focused on designing innovative building automation and HVAC controls solutions for commercial and institutional projects.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys translating project requirements into complete BAS designs while collaborating with project managers, programmers, and field teams to deliver successful projects from concept through installation.

What You'll Do
  • Design complete Building Automation System (BAS) solutions for HVAC controls projects.
  • Create control drawings, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, points lists, valve and damper schedules, and bill of materials.
  • Develop and refine sequences of operation for mechanical systems and controls programming.
  • Design BAS network architecture utilizing BACnet and other industry communication protocols.
  • Review project plans, specifications, and contract documents to ensure designs meet project requirements.
  • Prepare submittal packages and engineering documentation for customer approval.
  • Generate and track RFIs while assisting with design revisions and change orders throughout project execution.
  • Support project managers, programmers, and field personnel with technical guidance during installation and commissioning.
  • Participate in occasional project site visits to verify field conditions and support project startup.
  • Maintain organized project documentation throughout the design process.

What We're Looking For
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Mechanical Technology, Electronics, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Experience designing Building Automation or HVAC Controls systems.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC equipment, control sequences, and mechanical systems.
  • Working knowledge of BACnet and other building automation communication protocols.
  • AutoCAD experience preferred.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
