Astrion has an exciting opportunity for a Heating, Ventilations, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Engineer located at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA. The HVAC Engineer serves as the primary Technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) and Lifecycle Planner for all heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems at NASA Ames Research Center. This role focuses on Quality Assurance (QA), Contract Oversight, and Long-Range Capital Planning to support infrastructure modernization and operational readiness in support of NASA Missions and Projects.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) or relevant technical field with 5–10 years experience in commercial/industrial HVAC systems, or In lieu of a formal degree, 12+ years of specialized, hands-on experience in the operation, maintenance, and technical oversight of large-scale mechanical systems
  • Experience and working knowledge of ASHRAE Standards (including 62.1 and 90.1), California Title 24 (or applicable state/federal energy codes), EPA refrigerant management regulations (Section 608), and OSHA safety standards.
  • Flexible in adapting to deadlines, changing schedules, competing priorities, and unpredictable events
  • Thorough, detail oriented, and organized, with excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks
  • Familiar with and able to present data and recommendations to a diverse audience of project managers, engineers, technical staff, and contractors
  • Superb verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-motivated and independent thinker

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS 

  • NASA, federal, state, or local government facility and/or large scale infrastructure experience highly desired
  • Knowledge and experience working within Federal and California facilities infrastructure (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems) a benefit
  • Experience with aerospace facilities and infrastructure an advantage
  • Exceptional customer relationship management highly desirable

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop a 5-to-10-year master plan for HVAC infrastructure including modernization strategies and cost-benefit analyses
  • Provide deep technical expertise to verify compliance with federal and state mandates
  • Ensure all work and facility modifications strictly adhere to ASHRAE Standards (including 62.1 and 90.1), California Title 24 (or applicable state/federal energy codes), EPA refrigerant management regulations (Section 608), and OSHA safety standards
  • Provide technical requirements for equipment replacement
  • Write detailed technical requirements for emergency repairs
  • Lead root-cause analyses for major equipment failures and implement mitigation and maintenance strategies
  • Perform design review and evaluate engineering drawings and modeling
  • Support technical reviews of any equipment replacement RFI’s/quotes to ensure compliance with the technical requirements
  • Identify, communicate, and deconflict tasks, deliverables and project impacts
  • Working with the project managers and technical staff to forecast, plan, and track project performance
  • Interface with Government, contractors, and project partner staff for tasks, updates, and status
  • Responsible for monthly, annual, and project milestone review assessments and reports
