Job Description

MR. AIR NYC

HVAC Installer/ Lead Installer Trainee

Job type: Full-time

Work location: Based in Brooklyn, with field installation work throughout New York City

Base pay: $26-$34 per hour, based on relevant experience and demonstrated skills

About the Position

MR. AIR NYC is seeking an HVAC Installer with prior hands-on trade experience who wants to continue developing into an independent installer and, over time, become qualified for greater technical and crew-lead responsibilities.

This is not an entry-level helper position. We are looking for someone with meaningful experience using mechanical and construction tools who is comfortable working in active installation environments and wants to develop advanced ductless, heat-pump, and retrofit installation skills.

MR. AIR NYC specializes in ductless mini-split, heat-pump, and VRF installations throughout New York City. Our projects frequently take place in brownstones, townhouses, apartments, condominiums, co-ops, and other existing buildings where equipment access, piping routes, condensate management, electrical controls, masonry, finished interiors, and property protection require careful workmanship.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with and progressively take ownership of ductless mini-split and heat-pump installations.
  • Install and support refrigerant piping, condensate drainage, equipment, and related components.
  • Assist with wall-mounted, multi-zone, cassette, concealed-ducted, and related HVAC systems.
  • Perform drilling, routing, mounting, sealing, insulation, and finish work.
  • Assist with equipment placement and setup.
  • Participate in pressure testing, evacuation, startup, and commissioning based on demonstrated competency.
  • Assist with electrical and control wiring within the scope of assigned work and appropriate supervision.
  • Protect customer property throughout installation work.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe jobsite.
  • Follow installation plans, manufacturer requirements, and company workmanship standards.
  • Complete required project photographs and documentation.
  • Identify missing materials, damaged equipment, and unexpected field conditions.
  • Raise questions and unexpected conditions promptly so they can be addressed correctly.
  • Work cooperatively with Lead Installers and other crew members.
  • Assist with material organization, cleanup, and project closeout.
  • Take on progressively more advanced responsibilities as skills are demonstrated.

Qualifications

  • Approximately 2+ years of HVAC installation, mechanical construction, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, or closely related trade experience preferred.
  • Meaningful hands-on experience using construction and mechanical tools.
  • HVAC or ductless installation experience is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to follow technical instructions, job plans, and manufacturer requirements.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality.
  • Willingness to learn and accept technical feedback.
  • Ability to work safely on ladders and in HVAC installation environments.
  • Ability to perform the essential physical functions of field installation work.
  • Ability to work professionally in occupied residential properties.
  • Ability to communicate jobsite problems and ask questions when instructions or conditions are unclear.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with any of the following is especially valuable:
  • Ductless mini-split systems.
  • Heat pumps.
  • Refrigerant piping.
  • Condensate drainage and pumps.
  • Electrical and control wiring.
  • Sheet-metal or ductwork.
  • Core drilling or masonry.
  • Carpentry or finish work.
  • Brownstones, townhouses, or NYC residential construction.
  • Ceiling cassettes.
  • Concealed ducted systems.
  • Multi-zone systems.
  • EPA Section 608 certification.
  • Candidates do not need to meet every preferred qualification.

What We Value

Successful employees in this position are dependable, mechanically capable, detail-oriented, willing to ask questions, receptive to technical feedback, respectful toward coworkers and customers, and interested in developing beyond a helper-level role.

We expect employees to raise concerns when something appears incorrect rather than continuing work without clarification.

Training and Career Development

MR. AIR NYC provides paid technical development and hands-on learning opportunities.

Training may include ductless and heat-pump installation, refrigerant piping, condensate systems, electrical and controls, pressure testing, evacuation, equipment startup, commissioning, ductwork, manufacturer training, job planning, quality control, and customer communication.

Employees take on more advanced work as competency develops.

A typical progression may include:

HVAC Installer Senior Installer / Assistant Lead Lead Installer

Advancement is based on demonstrated technical skill, workmanship, reliability, safety, communication, teamwork, responsibility, and readiness for greater independence. Promotion is not based solely on length of employment.

Employees who develop strong technical skills but do not want people-management responsibilities may also have opportunities to pursue more specialized technical work.

Compensation and Benefits

Base pay is $26-$34 per hour, based on relevant experience and demonstrated capabilities.

Candidates who already demonstrate substantially more advanced independent installation and crew-lead capability may be considered separately for higher-level installer opportunities.

Paid technical development and hands-on training are provided as part of the position.

Hiring Process

Qualified candidates may participate in:

1. An initial recruiting conversation.

2. An experience and technical screen.

3. A hands-on practical assessment.

4. A discussion of career goals.

5. Verification of relevant credentials and driving qualifications, where applicable. 6. Reference checks.

7. A paid field assessment, where appropriate.

Any field assessment involving productive work will be paid. Candidates will not be charged fees to apply for or obtain this position.

We do not expect candidates to know everything. We do expect candidates to accurately represent their experience, demonstrate the skills they already possess, and be willing to continue learning.

MR. AIR NYC provides equal employment opportunities to qualified applicants and employees without unlawful discrimination based on protected characteristics.
