    Job Description

    Overview

    The HVAC Journeyman is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and servicing commercial heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC-R) systems. This position performs preventive maintenance, responds to service requests, diagnoses mechanical and electrical issues, and ensures all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable codes, customer requirements, and company standards.

    The ideal candidate is a skilled commercial HVAC technician with strong troubleshooting abilities, excellent customer service skills, and experience working independently in occupied commercial, institutional, healthcare, life sciences, or industrial facilities.

    Responsibilities

    • Install, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair commercial HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
    • Perform preventive maintenance on:
      • Air handling units (AHUs)
      • Rooftop units (RTUs)
      • Variable Air Volume (VAV) systems
      • Split systems
      • Heat pumps
      • Chillers
      • Boilers
      • Cooling towers
      • Pumps
      • Exhaust and supply fans
      • Building automation system (BAS) controlled equipment
    • Diagnose electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydronic, and refrigeration system issues.
    • Read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, sequence of operations, and technical manuals.
    • Test electrical components including motors, contactors, relays, transformers, VFDs, sensors, and controls.
    • Recover, evacuate, and charge refrigerant in accordance with EPA regulations.
    • Perform combustion analysis and boiler diagnostics when applicable.
    • Calibrate thermostats, sensors, actuators, and control devices.
    • Replace compressors, motors, bearings, belts, valves, coils, and other HVAC components.
    • Complete work orders, service reports, and preventive maintenance documentation using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) or mobile device.
    • Communicate equipment conditions and repair recommendations to supervisors and customers.
    • Coordinate with building management and other trades to minimize operational disruptions.
    • Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and service vehicle stock.
    • Participate in an on-call rotation for emergency service as required.
    • Maintain a safe work environment by following OSHA, company safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, confined space requirements, and PPE standards.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

    • High school diploma or GED.
    • Local 537 Membership
    • Completion of an approved HVAC apprenticeship or equivalent experience.
    • EPA Section 608 Universal Certification.
    • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
    • Minimum of 4–6 years of commercial HVAC service experience.
    • Strong knowledge of:
      • Refrigeration cycle
      • Electrical troubleshooting
      • HVAC controls
      • Hydronic systems
      • Gas-fired equipment
      • Mechanical systems
    • Ability to read electrical schematics and mechanical drawings.
    • Proficiency using electrical testing equipment including:
      • Digital multimeter
      • Clamp meter
      • Megohmmeter
      • Refrigerant gauges
      • Vacuum gauges
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and mobile work order applications.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS) such as:
      • Johnson Controls
      • Siemens
      • Honeywell
      • Trane
      • Schneider Electric
    • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
    • Experience in healthcare, laboratory, pharmaceutical, higher education, or critical facility environments.
    • Manufacturer training from Carrier, Trane, Daikin, York, Lennox, Mitsubishi, or similar OEMs.
