About Us

The NC Department of Administration is the business manager for North Carolina state government. The department oversees Government Operations such as building construction, purchasing and contracting for goods and services, maintaining facilities, managing state vehicles, acquiring and disposing of real property, and operating auxiliary services such as courier mail delivery and the sale of state and federal surplus property. Additionally, the department manages many of the states advocacy programs that provide assistance and services to diverse segments of the states population that have been traditionally underserved.

Description of Work

The HVAC Mechanic position troubleshoots, calibrates, repairs, and maintains and operates the DDC BAS (Direct Digital Control - Building Automation System) as well as components and sub-systems of an overall HVAC system including electric/electronics speed controllers, pneumatic sensors, electric/pneumatic valves, motors, humidistat's, pumps, chillers, condensers, air handling units and miscellaneous control elements.

Key Responsibilities: • Working knowledge of refrigeration theory. • Working knowledge of operating (BAU) building automation systems. • Basic knowledge of electricity sufficient to troubleshoot and repair complex electrical control systems. • Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, and repair of air-conditioning and refrigeration systems. • Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions and to prescribe and perform repair procedures. • Skill in the use of tools and equipment utilized in the repair of air-conditioning systems.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES

MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES

• Knowledge of chilled water distribution systems and the ability to troubleshoot and repair • Operational knowledge of DDC automation systems and the ability to use these systems to diagnose mechanical, electrical or control issues and to prescribe or perform repair procedures. • Experience in reading and comprehending blueprints and wiring diagrams. • Experience servicing and repairing computer room air conditioning systems.

Responsibilities (continued)

• Provide preventive maintenance on a wide variety of HVAC systems including window units, split systems, heat pumps, and large-scale industrial chillers including units and associated control systems. Work includes preventive maintenance on centrifugal chillers, descaling chiller tubes. • Operates DDC automation systems that control the heating and cooling of large office buildings and diagnoses mechanical and electrical problems using DCC readings. • Removes old HVAC equipment and installs new units including equipment, duct work, controls, and condensate drainage. • Diagnoses and repairs a wide variety of HVAC systems including window units, split systems, heat pumps.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution and control systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications

Requires current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.
