GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming State Penitentiary is seeking a dedicated and experienced Boiler Technician to oversee our vital heating and cooling infrastructure. In this role, you would be responsible for the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of multiple hydronic and steam systems. You will serve as the primary subject matter expert for boiler and HVAC operations across five prison facilities, ensuring optimal functionality and safety at all times. Furthermore, you will step into a supervisory role and directly supervise, support, and guide the facility's HVAC and plumbing staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at this job level.

  • Responsible for ensuring a safe and enjoyable workplace, including participation in initiatives designed to promote a positive work environment.
  • Responsible for planning, coordinating, delegating, and reviewing work assignments and productivity.
  • Assesses technical skills on a continual basis and suggests training programs to alleviate deficiencies and enhance knowledge of HVAC/R system developments.
  • Gives assistance and technical support to crew members in the performance of their duties.
  • Performs preventive and predictive maintenance, inspection, calibration, troubleshooting, repair, and replacement of HVAC/R systems, equipment, and environmental controls, including air handlers, boilers, and chillers.
  • Retrofit outdated equipment to take advantage of new technologies.
  • Interacts with agency personnel and vendors to facilitate improved system performance and service.
  • Ensures systems meet or exceed program requirements and comply with existing building, health, and safety codes and standards.
  • Works with energy management programming to achieve the most cost-effective and energy-efficient operation of building HVAC/R equipment.
  • Makes adjustments and programming changes as seasonal demands and changes in occupied space utilization occur.
  • Plans, directs, assists, supervises, and inspects the work of HVAC and plumbing staff as well as skilled and non-skilled inmate workers, including training inmate work crews on the proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Review data and maintain records through the AIM maintenance management software.
  • Order parts and materials and ensure supplies are on hand for daily operations, and follow proper procurement protocols.
  • Ensures all tools, keys, and chemicals are accounted for daily.
  • May work with and escort vendors and contractors to complete various tasks and assignments.
  • Be able to work on-call on a rotating basis to include occasional night and weekend hours.
  • Ensures adherence to all WDOC policies and procedures.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to those with 5+ years of progressive work experience in the HVAC field with the specific knowledge and experience of working on boiler systems and prior supervisory experience.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, and tools in the operation, calibration, adjustment, maintenance, and installation of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Knowledge of the theory and principles of refrigeration, air conditioning, ventilation, electrical, fluid flow, boiler, and heating system operations.
  • Knowledge of microcomputer-operated environmental control systems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelors Degree (typically in Management)

Experience:

0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in HVAC) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Senior HVAC Specialist

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

EPA License

Education & Experience Substitution:

3-5 years of progressive work experience (typically in HVAC) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Senior HVAC Specialist
