QUALIFICATIONS

Must be a high school graduate from a regionally accredited school or have GED. Must have five (5) years of experience in HVAC and mechanical trades, general trades, and work. Must have EPA Certification for the proper use of refrigerants, including recovery, recycling, and reclaim. Must have experience in overhauling and servicing heating, air conditioning, freezers, and refrigeration units. Must have thorough knowledge of the principles of refrigeration, electrical circuitry, and air movements common to heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems, practices, methods, materials, and tools used in trade. Must be able to perform maintenance on gas-fired heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment, such as direct expansion units, to include air conditioning systems, heat pumps, freezers, coolers, ice machines, and water coolers. Must be able to perform general maintenance on centrifugal and reciprocating chillers, chill and condenser water valves, pumps, and condenser water towers.

ABILITY TO MEET SUITABILITY CRITERIA

Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act 2002-457. Background Check and Drug Screen.

Good general health, clean in attire, and professional in demeanor. A valid Alabama Drivers May be required to obtain a Commercial Drivers License. Must have reliable transportation.

MUST HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF

Must have knowledge of practices, methods, materials, and tools used in the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing crafts. Must have knowledge of building codes, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the specific trades to be observed.

MUST HAVE ABILITY TO

Must have the ability to draft and work from specifications and blueprints and to calculate materials and man-hours as necessary for projects. Must be able to prepare work. Must have skill in the use and care of a variety of standard hand and power tools, machines, materials, and equipment of the trade.

LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Must have the ability to read and interpret documents, including safety rules, construction schematics, and electrical equipment manuals, and school and district procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Must be able to prepare work. Must have the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, ability to provide basic supervision to other employees, and adhere to schedules.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Must have general knowledge of computer usage and ability to use email, internet software, and word processing software. Must be able to use technology to communicate, produce, and maintain reports, and to correspond with district staff and other team members. Must be able to use the MCPSS Work Order Program.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Performs skilled corrective maintenance duties to Mechanical Systems, including but not limited to special projects and supplemental support for zone activities as required. Provides leadership and supervision to workers as assigned. Inspects work in progress and upon completion in mechanical crafts and related building. Operates specialized maintenance equipment and tools in a responsible and safe manner. Utilizes the work order system to enter and update information to fulfill complete or escalate work requests as needed in a timely manner. Evaluates work orders to determine necessary equipment, materials, and time to complete the job. Fills out accurate and timely records of time and cost required for each project. Maintains accurate and timely records of time, labor, and materials. Requisitions necessary materials and equipment to complete the job. Advises skilled trade workers and multi-craft technicians on duties, issues, and procedures. Enforces Board Policies for safety. Performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and tools and reports needed repairs and replacements to supervisor. Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules using knowledge of workers capabilities and difficulty of work. Recommends measures to improve efficiency, such as changes in working conditions. Performs specialized maintenance duties with minimal supervision on a regularly scheduled or as needed basis. Drafts materials lists and orders materials for. Coordinates work schedules with the HVAC Coordinator and other departments and/or. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with supervisors, other foremen or lead positions, and employees. May be assigned other duties as required.

Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements such as dirt, fumes, gases, unpleasant odors, extreme vibrations, hazards such as moving vehicles, electric current, moving mechanical parts, etc., and/or loud noises.

EVALUATION

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Boards policy on Evaluation of Classified Employees.

Evaluation will be by the respective HVAC Coordinator or his/her designee.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

12-months, 260 days, 8 hours per day. The daily work schedule will be determined by the Controls and Energy Manager & HVAC Coordinator or his/her designee. Work schedules are subject to change.

The At Will Employee is subject to the Students First Act of 2011 and other applicable state and federal laws.

The employee is subject to at random drug screens during employment.

This position may also be required to work after hours on weekends and to perform duties on shift work schedules when necessary.

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
