    Durham Public Schools Maintenance Services Job Description HVAC Technician JOB TITLE HVAC Technician Level 10 REPORTS TO: Mechanical Supervisor SALARY: Based on State and Local Salary Schedules STATUS: Permanent, 12 months, Classified, Nonexempt SUMMARY: Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled level work in the maintenance and repair

    of

    ventilation,

    air

    conditioning

    and

    environmental

    control

    systems.

    Work

    includes

    the

    independent

    performance

    of

    less

    technical

    tasks

    of

    the

    HVAC

    trade

    for

    which

    detailed

    instructions

    are

    available.

    As

    experience

    is

    gained,

    more

    technical

    tasks

    are

    performed

    under

    supervision.

    Employee

    must

    exercise

    independent

    judgment

    and

    initiative

    in

    performing

    assigned

    tasks.

    Employee

    must

    also

    exercise

    tact

    and

    courtesy

    in

    contacts

    with

    various

    school

    officials.

    Reports

    to

    HVAC

    Supervisor.

    RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES 1. Plan layout, install and repair wiring, heating and air conditioning equipment, kitchen equipment

    and

    control

    equipment.

    1. Plan new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials. 3. Provide access for future maintenance and consistent with specifications local codes. 4. Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble and install piping. Splice wire by stripping insulation from

    terminal

    leads,

    twisting

    or

    soldering

    wires

    together

    and

    applying

    tape

    or

    terminal

    cups.

    1. Connect wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment. 6. Install controls such as switches, relays and solenoids. 7. Install compressors in air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. 8. Maintain gas fired equipment, such as kitchen equipment, boilers and water heaters. 9. Connect wiring to equipment, such as motors and compressors. 10. Test continuity of circuit to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components with testing

    instruments

    such

    as

    ohmmeter

    and

    circuit

    tracer.

    1. Repair faulty equipment or systems. 12. Distribute and/or assign mechanics work orders on a daily basis. 13. Other related duties as assigned by supervisor and/or Director. MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS: 1. High School Diploma or GED. 2. Valid N.C. Driver's License. 3. Seven (7) years related experience and/or training in HVAC.
