Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION:

The HVAC Technician performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Inspects system using building automation controls. Performs diagnostic and mechanical repairs to chillers, cooling towers, and other types of equipment. Prepares required documentation and logs preventative maintenance and repair activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Installs, troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs commercial HVAC equipment.

  2. Inspects, services, cleans, and repairs air handlers, chillers, frequency drives (AFD/VFD) air compressors, exhaust fans, hot and chilled water pumps, boilers, pneumatic lines, and control wiring.

  3. Inspects and maintains cooling towers, chilled and hot water distribution systems and performs tests to ensure safe, effective operation of HVAC equipment and building automation controls.

  4. Prepares documentation as required for compliance with regulations and department directives.

  5. Creates and maintains preventative maintenance and repair activities.

  6. Responds to emergency situations during and/or after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate concerns.

  7. Performs other duties as may be required or assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.

  2. Four years of experience in the commercial HVAC, which may include HVAC Technician certification.

  3. Verified Universal EPA certification.

  4. Valid Florida driver's license with the ability to obtain a Florida driver's license within 30 days of employment, with acceptable driving record.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. HVAC Direct Digital Controls (DDC) experience with Johnson Controls Metasys and Trane Tracer Summit, and/or Tracer Synchrony/Ensemble.

  2. HVAC Technician certification or equivalent.

  3. Ductwork repair experience with metal, duct board, flex.

  4. Experience with variable airflow systems.

  5. Heat pumps certification.

  6. Experience with troubleshooting refrigeration.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  1. Knowledge of HVAC equipment, materials, and tools.

  2. Ability to troubleshoot and rectify complex mechanical problems.

  3. Ability to read and understand mechanical equipment and controls diagrams and follow mechanical safety procedures.

  4. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  5. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  6. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  7. Ability to become proficient with office computer applications including Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel).

  8. Committed to working in a multi-cultural environment.

  9. Ability to exhibit a professional, courteous demeanor.

WORK ENVIRONMENT and SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:

  1. Works inside and outside environment with exposure to various weather conditions.

  2. Handles hazardous materials and equipment.

  3. Exposure to high voltage.

  4. Must wear protective gear.

  5. Exposure to hot water, fumes, and gases.

  6. Must be able to work various shifts and days as needed; may be assigned to various campus sites.

  7. Must be able to work in confined spaces, remain standing and/or walking for long periods, and climb ladders.

  8. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs, unassisted.

  9. Must be able to climb a ladder and work on a ladder for hours at a time.

  10. Required to drive College vehicles.

Conditions of Employment
