About Johnson Barrow

For six decades, Johnson Barrow has pushed HVAC innovation across the Pacific Northwest. Our reputation is built on technical excellence, customer-first service, and a culture where people take pride in what they build together. We lead with modern system technology to meet today’s energy-conscious demands and support our teams with a positive, growth-minded environment.

A day in this role

You start the morning reviewing commissioning checklists for a newly installed chiller plant. By mid-day, you’re validating control setpoints, confirming safety interlocks, and balancing airflow. In the afternoon, you’re diagnosing a refrigerant-side issue at another customer site, logging test results, and walking the client through recommended improvements. You wrap up by syncing with a project manager to close out a post-installation punch list and scheduling preventive maintenance for next month.

Travel and schedule

This is a remote position serving customers nationwide with up to 80% travel. We collaborate with you to build a sustainable rotation, such as 14 days on / 7 days off or 21 days on / 14 days off, providing meaningful home time and balance. All business travel expenses are company-paid or reimbursed per policy, with per diem covered for assigned jobs.

What you’ll do

  • Commission and start up commercial and process HVAC systems and chillers, validating proper operation and settings.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to extend equipment life and improve efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot and repair issues including electrical faults, refrigerant leaks, and airflow imbalances.
  • Verify controls, safeties, and protective devices function as intended.
  • Partner with project managers and install teams to quickly resolve post-install items.
  • Document all service activities: diagnostics, test readings, parts used, and adjustments made.
  • Communicate clearly with customers about performance, upgrades, and service priorities.
  • Work safely and in compliance with codes and company procedures.
  • Stay sharp through ongoing training on HVAC technologies, diagnostic tools, and energy-efficient practices.

What you bring

  • 4+ years of commercial HVAC service or maintenance experience (installation exposure is a plus).
  • Advanced understanding of the refrigeration cycle.
  • Strong ability to read wiring diagrams and diagnose electrical/control issues.
  • EPA Type 1 & 2 Refrigerant Certification (required).
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Comfort working on rooftops, in mechanical rooms, and in outdoor conditions.
  • Live anywhere in the U.S.; willing to travel extensively.

Pay transparency

Hourly range: $50–$80 USD, depending on experience and qualifications. Johnson Barrow provides a comprehensive benefits package and reimburses business travel per company policy. Per diem and travel costs are covered for assigned jobs.
