Utility Property Accountant

Contract Length: 12 Months (Possible Extension)
Location: Newark, NJ
Work Setup: Hybrid (Newark, NJ / Work From Home)

Join a leading utility organization committed to delivering reliable energy services while investing in critical infrastructure. As a Utility Property Accountant, you will play a key role in ensuring accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and fixed asset accounting that supports strategic business decisions.

Utility Property Accountant Responsibilities

  • Record, review, and analyze utility construction and fixed asset transactions to ensure proper GAAP and FERC financial reporting and rate recovery for Property, Plant & Equipment.
  • Prepare fixed asset analyses, general ledger reconciliations, and special reports using the Power Plant Fixed Asset System.
  • Support Utility Finance with five-year financial plans, annual budgets, depreciation, and amortization models.
  • Assist with regulatory filings, including Base Rate Cases, infrastructure filings, and requests from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Prepare schedules and disclosures for SEC Forms 10-Q, 10-K, FERC Form 1, and other regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Perform monthly financial reporting, variance analysis, account reconciliations, and ad hoc financial projects.
  • Coordinate internal and external audit requests while supporting Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance and internal controls.
  • Collaborate with IT, Financial Systems Support, and business leaders to enhance accounting systems, reporting processes, and automation initiatives.

Utility Property Accountant Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, or CPA with a related degree.
  • Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience.
  • Strong knowledge of SAP and financial reporting.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP, and advanced formulas.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities independently.

Preferred

  • Experience in utility property accounting.
  • Knowledge of the Power Plant Fixed Asset System.
  • CPA designation and/or an advanced degree.
  • Experience preparing and analyzing financial statements within SAP.
  • Process automation experience.
