I&C Design Engineer – Nuclear

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Design Engineer to support complex engineering and design activities within a nuclear environment. This position is ideal for an experienced engineer with a strong background in digital control systems, data acquisition, distributed I&C platforms, plant networks, and related digital systems.

The selected engineer will work with limited supervision, independently managing assigned engineering responsibilities while collaborating closely with multidisciplinary project teams. This is a senior-level position requiring approximately 10 years of discipline experience and the ability to apply engineering principles to increasingly complex and varied assignments.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the design, modification, and implementation of Instrumentation & Controls systems within a nuclear environment.
• Review and/or produce engineering documentation associated with plant modifications and design changes.
• Support digital control and data acquisition systems, distributed I&C system platforms, and other plant digital systems.
• Work with systems such as:
  • Operator Aid Computer systems
  • Plant network systems
  • Security computer systems
  • Real-time/data acquisition/control systems
• Review hardware, software, system interfaces, and network-related components.
• Apply an understanding of industry cybersecurity design requirements to applicable engineering activities.
• Read, interpret, and work from plant engineering drawings, including:
  • Control Wiring Diagrams
  • One-Line Diagrams
  • Logic Diagrams
• Review and/or develop key engineering and design deliverables, including:
  • Engineering Change Base Documents
  • Equipment Database records
  • Electrical Elementary Diagrams
  • Connection Diagrams
  • Wiretabs
  • Bills of Materials (BOM)
  • Cable Cards
• Solve complex engineering problems within the I&C discipline with limited supervision.
• Work independently while coordinating effectively with engineering, design, operations, and other project stakeholders.
• Take ownership of assigned responsibilities and deliverables while maintaining flexibility as project priorities change.

Required Qualifications

• Approximately 10 years of relevant I&C/engineering discipline experience.
• Strong experience with one or more of the following:
  • Digital control systems
  • Data acquisition systems
  • Distributed I&C system platforms
  • Operator Aid Computer systems
  • Plant network systems
  • Security computer systems
• Knowledge of real-time, data acquisition, and control systems, including associated hardware, software, and interfaces.
• Familiarity with computer networks and operating systems.
• Understanding of industry cybersecurity design requirements.
• Ability to read and interpret Control Wiring Diagrams, One-Line Diagrams, and Logic Diagrams.
• Ability to work on assigned engineering projects with minimal supervision.
• Strong teamwork, communication, accountability, and problem-solving skills.
• Self-motivated with the ability to work effectively in a complex and changing project environment.

Highly Desired Qualifications

• Knowledge of the Standard Design Process.
• Previous experience working at a nuclear site.
• Previous Duke Energy experience.
• Current or previous Duke Energy qualifications related to:
  • CO-FLT-ENG-2000 – Design Change / Preparation of Engineering Changes
  • FLT-ENG-DIGITAL-EC – Digital Engineering Change
  • CO-FLT-ENG-2050 – Design Verification
  • CO-FLT-AD – Applicability Determination Preparer
  • CO-FLT-50.59-SCR – 50.59 Screener

Ideal Candidate

The strongest candidate will bring a combination of senior-level I&C design experience, digital control systems expertise, plant engineering documentation experience, and nuclear industry knowledge. Previous Duke Energy experience and existing Duke design-process qualifications would be especially valuable.

This individual should be comfortable taking ownership of complex engineering assignments, producing and reviewing detailed design-change documentation, and working independently while remaining an effective member of a larger engineering team.
