Ice & Facility Maintenance Supervisor

Hiring Range is $61,579 to $74,594 annually based on qualifications, education and experience as it relates to the position.

Position Summary:

Under direction of the General Manager of Ice, this position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the ice rink operations at the Family Sports Center and South Suburban Sports Complex. This position is primarily responsible for ensuring safe conditions on five ice rinks for hockey events, lessons, open skate, and all other ice programs offered. Provides supervision, support, and direction of the daily activities of ice and facility maintenance and custodial staff. Is responsible for identifying, planning, prioritizing, scheduling, coordinating, assigning, and evaluating projects and personnel associated with ice rink operations. Works closely with the General Manager to ensure the highest quality customer service and supports the overall mission and goals of the Ice Department. Performs duties in a manner consistent with the stated values of the organization.

Essential Duties:

  • Supervises the daily work activities of full-time and part-time staff plus additional contractual and volunteer personnel. Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains new staff. Monitors standards and provides constructive and timely performance evaluations. Works with employees to correct deficiencies. Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with organizational policy.
  • Works closely with Ice Department staff to ensure ice operations align with facility operations, programming, rentals, maintenance, and custodial/customer service of the Sports Complex and Family Sports Center.
  • Determines staffing needs, oversees the scheduling, assignments, and daily workflow of assigned staff, and provides backup support as needed. Reviews and approves employee bi-weekly timesheets. Works directly with Payroll to resolve any pay issues.
  • Administers and adheres to District policies. Assists in preparing, enforcing, maintaining, and modifying policies and procedures manuals that comply with local, state and national regulations. Conducts periodic staff meetings to provide and gather information; answers questions and responds to complaints and concerns, both internally and externally.
  • Works in conjunction with the General Manager to develop competent and productive staff by planning, organizing, and implementing employee training with a strong emphasis on safety and security, quality customer service, and equipment maintenance.
  • Assists the General Manager of Ice in reviewing the facility schedules to ensure maintenance and programming are not conflicting.
  • Regularly performs walk-through inspections of facilities and ice surfaces, along with staff, to ensure safety standards are met. Carefully inspects the ice surfaces and refrigeration and overall appearance including any ice painting. Also inspects ice edges, boards, kick-plates, glass, and repairs damage or makes arrangements for immediate repairs or replacement. Maintains records of ice thickness, ice temperatures, humidity readings, ambient air readings, and dew point readings.
  • Coordinates daily, weekly and monthly building maintenance scheduling including all related contracted cleaning services. Works with Mechanical Maintenance Manager to create and coordinate a system to monitor all mechanical systems to include HVAC, electrical, and plumbing.
  • Assists with light mechanical work including but not limited to painting, plumbing, and carpentry to maintain good repair on buildings and facilities.
  • Regularly performs safety inspections on all ice equipment such as Zambonis and chargers, ice chippers, ice-edgers, skate sharpeners, and rental skates. Makes repairs and/or necessary arrangements for immediate repairs or replacement.
  • Recognizes emergency and dangerous situations by reacting quickly and calmly; administers first aid as needed.
  • Regularly inspects the compressor room to ensure proper brine levels and overall safe operating conditions. Makes arrangements for necessary parts and repairs as needed.
  • Routinely interacts with various external vendors and contractors, negotiating charges and coordinating equipment maintenance, parts and repairs, and replacements.
  • Ensures the ice facilities maintain the proper licenses required to operate and coordinates any necessary external inspections.
  • Works as part of a larger supervisory team to promote the business and all programs at the ice facilities. Assists in the organization and implementation of special events, and participates in the planning, organizing, promotion, staffing and evaluation of the events.
  • Promotes a positive image to the public. Participates in community planning and organizational meetings.
  • Determines ice scheduling needs by evaluating programs and activities; makes recommendations for improvement and future development, and implements changes.
  • Attends and participates in professional group meetings; stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of recreational and ice services programs.
  • Consistently demonstrates high ethical standards, good communication, and a professional appearance.
  • Exercises good judgment and proper safety precautions and practices at all times.
  • Assists the General Manager with developing division goals, objectives, and priorities and promoting a culture of excellence in customer service and safety.
  • Prepares and monitors the budget, managing revenues and expenditures, and preparing financial reports. Prepares bid documents, purchase orders, RFPs, and invoice requests; purchases, maintains and inventories materials and supplies. Works with vendors to ensure proper delivery and quality of materials and services. Prepares short and long-range revenue/expenditure projections, checks revenue streams, etc. Develops and implements strategies to increase usage of assigned areas.
  • Develops and maintains professional relationships with District employees, vendors, and various outside user groups to coordinate their programs and special events.
  • Responds tactfully, respectfully and in a timely manner to inquiries, complaints, and problems in person, through email, phone and mail by providing helpful information and explanations in-line with District policies and procedures. Thoughtfully handles confrontational or stressful interactions.
  • Keeps accurate records including personal timecard, daily activity reports, incident/accident reports, and material inventory logs according to District procedures in a timely manner.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings, trainings, and orientations.
  • May be required to assume manager’s duties and responsibilities or to assist with additional supervisory duties in manager’s absence.
  • Attends work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis.
  • Required to work weekends, evenings, and holidays; may be required to work shifts deviating from this position’s normal workdays.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Must be eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Associate degree in Recreation, Management or a related field.
  • Four (4) years’ related experience working in facility ice operations and/or equipment maintenance which includes one (1) year of supervisory experience in an ice arena or recreation facility.
  • Any combination of experience, training and education that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position may be considered.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:

  • CPR, First Aid and AED certificates or the ability to obtain upon hire.
  • Certified Ice Technician or additional related certifications preferred.
  • Certified Ice Rink Manager, Certified Arena Operator or Certified Arena Management is preferred.
  • Mobile Elevated Work Platform certificate or ability to obtain upon hire.
  • Mandatory Reporting certification, or the ability to obtain within 30 days.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver License or the ability to obtain upon hire and maintain an acceptable driving record.

Material and Equipment Used:

  • Regularly uses ice maintenance equipment which may include but is not limited to: Zambonis and chargers, ice chippers, ice edgers, skate sharpeners, hand tools, and cleaning supplies and chemicals.
  • Regularly uses standard office equipment including a personal computer, phone, calculator, printer, and photo copier.
  • This position regularly drives a District and/or personal motor vehicle for District business.

Working Environment:

  • Primarily works in a busy, loud ice arena and family entertainment center environment subject to interruptions and continuous noise with temperatures at the ice rink(s) between 40-55 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • This position also performs work in an office environment subject to interruptions and background noises.

Physical Requirements:

  • Extended periods spent standing, walking, sitting.
  • Occasional physical work lifting up to 75 pounds.
  • Required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
  • May occasionally climb, squat, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate tools, machinery, personal computer and equipment.
  • Foot/eye coordination required for operating motorized equipment.
  • Vision for reading, recording and interpreting information. Vision acuity to see close-up and at a distance with the ability to adjust focus allowing a broad field of vision.
