SUMMARY OF THE ROLE
The Immigration Staff Attorney provides comprehensive, client-centered immigration legal services to Her Justice clients, with a specialized focus on serving low-income women and gender-diverse individuals, including survivors of intimate partner violence, human trafficking, and other forms of gender-based violence. The Staff Attorney conducts thorough legal intake consultations, performs complex legal case assessments, provides legal advice and brief services, prepares appropriate matters for pro bono placement, and maintains a direct representation caseload involving humanitarian immigration matters within the scope of the Immigration Practice.
A core and significant component of this role is supporting Her Justice’s innovative pro bono delivery model. The Staff Attorney prepares client cases for placement with volunteer attorneys, develops long-term case strategies, and provides ongoing substantive legal mentorship and technical guidance to pro bono attorneys throughout the entire life of their cases. This includes regular case conferencing, reviewing and providing detailed feedback on legal filings, supporting preparation for client interviews and administrative proceedings, monitoring case progress, and ensuring the delivery of rigorous, high-quality legal services. The Staff Attorney also develops and delivers continuing legal education (CLE) trainings, creates substantive legal resources, and leads legal clinics and pro bono initiatives.
Working closely with the Director of the Immigration Practice and department colleagues, the Staff Attorney helps assess and strengthen the overall practice, stays abreast of rapid developments in federal immigration law and policy, identifies emerging legal issues affecting marginalized immigrants, and ensures consistent, effective case handling procedures. The position also represents Her Justice in strategic relationships with law firms, corporations, community-based organizations, legal services providers, and governmental agencies.
