Are you passionate about supporting children and young people with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs to thrive in education?

We're looking for an experienced and knowledgeable Inclusion Specialist (SEMH) to join our Inclusion Service. Working in partnership with schools, settings, families and other professionals across North Yorkshire, you'll play a key role in strengthening inclusive practice and improving outcomes for children and young people with SEMH needs.

About the role

Our Inclusion Service works alongside schools and settings across North Yorkshire to promote the inclusion, participation and achievement of children and young people with SEND. As an Inclusion Specialist, you'll bring specialist SEMH knowledge and experience to this work, helping schools and families understand individual needs and put effective support in place.

You'll assess and identify needs, explore the underlying causes of SEMH difficulties and help schools develop inclusive and pastoral approaches that build their confidence and capacity. You'll plan and model appropriate interventions, oversee individual casework and help ensure the local authority meets its statutory responsibilities.

Managing your own caseload, you'll lead on cases and work with colleagues to ensure children and young people receive coordinated, effective support. You'll also support and oversee casework undertaken by Inclusion Practitioners and work with schools to agree appropriate SEN support plans and review arrangements

What you'll be doing

This is a varied and influential role where you'll have the opportunity to make a difference at both an individual and wider service level.

You'll:

  • provide specialist advice, support and guidance to schools, settings and families around SEMH
  • manage a caseload, including leading on cases and overseeing casework undertaken by Inclusion Practitioners
  • assess needs and analyse school information and data to identify opportunities to strengthen inclusive practice
  • coach and model interventions and approaches to support children and young people
  • work alongside schools and settings to develop appropriate SEN support plans
  • develop and organise CPD opportunities for schools, settings and parents and carers
  • work collaboratively with health, CAMHS, statutory and voluntary agencies and other professionals
  • ensure children, young people and their parents or carers are involved in decisions about the support they receive
  • analyse information relating to areas including exclusions, attendance and part-time timetables, supporting and challenging schools where appropriate
  • contribute to the development and delivery of SEMH strategy across localities and the wider county
  • provide reports, data and presentations to support service development and demonstrate impact.

What you'll bring

You'll have extensive recent experience of working with children and young people with SEMH needs and/or behaviours associated with a range of SEND, alongside the professional knowledge and confidence to advise and support schools and families.

We're looking for someone who can demonstrate:

  • specialist knowledge of SEMH and how this can affect a child or young person's development, both at school and at home
  • a detailed understanding of how to support schools and families working with children and young people whose behaviour can be challenging
  • knowledge of relevant legislative frameworks, statutory assessment procedures and the SEND Code of Practice
  • knowledge of the mainstream school curriculum and Early Years/Pre-School initiatives
  • significant experience of assessment and monitoring
  • experience of working effectively with families
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • the ability to support children and young people who may struggle to regulate their feelings and behaviour, and to support others to do the same
  • strong assessment, target-setting, recording and report-writing skills
  • excellent organisational and time-management skills
  • the ability to build positive, collaborative relationships with a range of professionals and partners
  • a positive, solution-focused approach and commitment to restorative ways of working.

You'll be a qualified teacher or hold a related professional qualification, such as psychologist, social worker or occupational therapist. You'll also need to be able to travel for work purposes.

Why join us?

This is an opportunity to use your specialist knowledge and experience to influence practice beyond an individual caseload. You'll contribute to the development of SEMH approaches and strategy while working collaboratively with schools, families and professionals to help children and young people access the right support.

If you're passionate about inclusion, have strong specialist knowledge of SEMH and want to help schools and families create positive, lasting change for children and young people, we'd love to hear from you.
