Industrial Air Compressor Field Service Specialist

Location: Washington DC - Baltimore, MD

A day in your boots

Morning coffee, route planned, tools prepped. You arrive onsite to commission a new rotary screw unit, verify alignment, and run baseline readings with precision measuring tools. After lunch, you’re diagnosing a legacy reciprocating compressor, tracing a control issue through schematics. By late afternoon, you’re walking a customer through maintenance best practices on a Centac or ECC machine and its dryers, filters, and cooling support equipment. You wrap the day by submitting a clear, detailed service report and expenses—accurate, timely, and bill-ready.

The work you’ll own

• Install, maintain, and repair Ingersoll Rand equipment at customer facilities—rotary screw, reciprocating, and Centac/ECC compressors—plus connected compressed air components.
• Apply precision diagnostic methods and instruments to troubleshoot compressed air equipment and validate performance.
• Stay current on field installation and repair standards; know the operations and parts manuals for supported equipment.
• Advise and train customers, prospects, field sales, and service trainees on operation, care, and safety.
• Independently identify issues, recommend corrective actions, and provide clear written/oral updates to the manufacturing facility.
• Uphold high integrity in business practices; communicate service findings concisely and logically.
• Submit legible, thorough technical reports for every call suitable for customer billing.
• Provide accurate weekly timecards and expense reports; manage company business matters, credit card, and (if assigned) a company vehicle responsibly.

What you bring

• Experience: 2+ years troubleshooting industrial or commercial mechanical systems.
• Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
• License: Valid driver’s license held for at least 12 months with no major/frequent violations (including but not limited to: DUI in the past 5 years, Hit & Run, License Suspension, Reckless/Careless Driving, or multiple minor infractions/preventable collisions within 3 years).
• Environment: Comfortable working in mechanical equipment rooms, around noisy machinery, extreme weather, elevated/precarious locations, and high voltage per NFPA or equivalent standards.
• Physical: Regular use of hands/fingers; frequent walking, stooping, kneeling; ability to lift/move weights consistent with safety policy.
• Tech fluency: Working knowledge of Microsoft Office; proficiency with handheld smart devices (smartphone, iPad) and network-based systems.
• Service mindset: Strength in customer communication, conflict resolution, and negotiation; cost-effective travel discipline.
• Mechanical aptitude: Capability to learn, diagnose, and repair compressor systems and related machinery.

Preferred background

• EPA 608 / F-GAS 303/2008/CE/ISHRAE certifications preferred; refrigeration experience/certification is a plus.
• Experience with compressed air systems, centrifugal technologies, and solid controls background a plus; exposure to dryers, cooling towers, and filtration welcomed.
• Education in Electrical/Electronic Technology or HVAC with foundations in AC/DC circuits, schematics, motors/controls, PLCs, HVAC electricity/controls, refrigeration systems, and/or refrigerant certification. Military service or equivalent mechanical experience valued. Candidates with equivalent skills but without a formal program may be considered.

Travel and schedule

• Occasional training travel: 1–2 times per year, about one week each (approx. 5–10%).
• Shared on-call rotation for after-hours emergencies; some evenings/weekends during on-call weeks.
