Industrial Automation Controls Architect

At Matrix Design, great outcomes start with great people. We grow talent, strengthen our company, and deliver exceptional results. Our team thrives on a can‑do mindset, craftsmanship and quality, integrity in commitments, continuous improvement, collaboration, and purpose-driven work.

A day in the life

You start your morning reviewing a cell layout for a new line. By mid-morning, you’re building PLC logic in Allen‑Bradley Studio 5000 and sketching an HMI flow to make changeovers effortless. After lunch, you integrate a FANUC robot with servo motion, fine-tune a VFD, and validate safety I/O in a test stand. You huddle with mechanical, electrical, and software teammates to align on interfaces and commission updates. Before you wrap, you redline schematics, log issues, and update the project plan so everyone has a clear path to the next milestone.

What you’ll own

  • Architect, program, and deploy control systems for custom automation, including PLC and HMI development.
  • Integrate robotics and motion platforms (robots, servos, and VFDs) into robust, user-centered manufacturing solutions.
  • Partner closely with mechanical design, electrical design, robot programming, and software teams to assure end-to-end performance.
  • Support builds and launches: troubleshoot, debug, and optimize during development, installation, and commissioning.
  • Uphold safety and quality standards throughout design and implementation.
  • Create and maintain clear documentation: redlined electrical schematics, panel/layout drawings, and operator/maintenance guides.
  • Contribute to project estimating, schedules, and cost tracking to keep delivery predictable.

Skills that set you up for success

  • PLC programming expertise (Allen‑Bradley, Siemens).
  • Hands-on with industrial robots (FANUC, ABB, Yaskawa).
  • Strong command of motion systems, VFDs, and servo drives.
  • Comfort reading and developing electrical schematics.
  • Fluency with industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, ProfiNet).
  • Resourceful problem-solver with strong troubleshooting instincts.
  • Clear communicator and collaborative teammate.
  • Organized, detail-oriented approach to complex work.

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years leading controls projects focused on automation and robotics.
  • Proven experience with PLCs, HMIs, and deploying industrial robots.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and risk assessments (ANSI, NFPA, ISO).
  • Experience programming safety PLCs/controllers.
  • History of troubleshooting industrial electrical control systems.
  • Bonus: PE license and/or vendor certifications (e.g., Rockwell, Siemens).

Travel and compensation

  • Travel up to 40% for on-site integration, commissioning, and support.

The posted salary range represents an estimate for this role. The final offer will be determined based on several factors, including the candidate’s specific skills, professional experience, and relevant certifications.
