Work Location: Various Locations Depending on Area of Assignment

Multiple Lift Stations/North County Reclamation Facility/Southeast Reclamation Facility.

Work Hours: 40 hours/week - Schedule will work around vocational/technical school schedule.

THIS JOB POSTING IS FOR AN APPRENTICESHIP POSITION WHICH REQUIRES ENROLLMENT IN A SPECIFIC VOCATIONAL PROGRAM AT MANATEE TECHNICIAL COLLEGE (MTC). IF SELECTED FOR THE ROLE, MANATEE COUNTY WILL SET UP ENOLLMENT WITH THE MTC APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM.

Note: Position level and salary will be dependent on qualification (DOQ).

Expected Starting Hourly Range for Apprentice Level I: $21.92 hourly

Works directly under the guidance of an experienced mentor to learn fundamentals of the highly specialized Industrial Control technical skilled trade. Performs a variety of advanced technical tasks relating to the installation, maintenance, or service of three phase electrical systems. Works with high voltages when installing, modifying, or repairing electrical equipment. Initiates troubleshooting of motor controls or repairs based on computerized radio telemetry reports or maintenance management system reports. Work is performed with considerable independence and reviewed for results obtained.

Working Conditions

The work environment may include exposure to high noise levels while performing certain essential job functions. The position requires the ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds independently and up to 75 pounds with assistance, with or without reasonable accommodation. Work may involve strenuous physical activity under varying climatic conditions and in both indoor and outdoor environments. This position requires the ability to distinguish colors and the ability to climb and descend ladders. Periodically required to work other than normal business hours, including weekends and holidays.

Job Description

Essential Functions

These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.

Performs maintenance, modification, repair, testing and installation of electrical fixtures and equipment in three phase industrial plants, including wiring, lighting, machinery, power appliances, overhead circuits, motors, relays, switches, and control boxes, including 480-V, AC applications, and DC applications.

Performs emergency repair of industrial motor control centers. May be required to assume responsibility for controlling electrical emergencies to prevent system failures.

Troubleshoots and repairs electro-mechanical equipment, motor control, and instrumentation. Recommends replacement when necessary.

Maintains, repairs, adjusts, and installs electrical motors, generators, automatic power transfer switches, variable frequency drives, radio telemetry systems, meters, timers, and control centers in industrial applications. Installs conduit, wall outlets, and fittings.

Detects causes of electrical failures, calculates line leads to determine wire and equipment size and capacity. Prepares sketches for electrical layout and installations. Analyzes telemetry reports to predict failures of monitored equipment.

Interprets and ensures compliance with existing electrical codes. Obtains internal safety permits and wire numbers. Performs all work following established code requirement and safety protocols.

May assist in the training of less-tenured Industrial Control Technicians.

Performs other related duties as assigned, including participation in emergency or disaster response activities, as required and consistent with the employee's qualifications, essential job functions, and appliable federal and Florida law.

Minimum Qualifications

Apprentice I-IV: All Levels require a valid Florida drivers license within 30 days of hire date. All Levels must be registered in an apprenticeship training program at Manatee Technical College (MTC) or similar vocational program within 30 days of hire date.

Apprenticeship Level II

Minimum of one (1) year experience (2080 hrs.) Must possess training certifications in Arc Flash Training and Confined Space.

Apprenticeship Level Ill

Minimum of two (2) years experience (4160) hrs.) Must possess training certifications in Basic TCU Training and Montor Control Center Training.

Apprenticeship Level IV

Minimum of three (3) years experience (6240) hrs.) Must possess Barneys Pump Training, Advanced TCU Training, and Switchgear Training.

Previous experience in troubleshooting industrial motor controls highly desired.

Journeyman License desired.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Able to prioritize tasks, deal effectively with competing and changing priorities, and meet deadlines. Accurate, detail-oriented, and organized. Able to resolve non-routine situations and problems that require analysis to understand.

Knowledge of the use and care of advanced tools, equipment and testing devices of the electrical trade, including working with high voltages.

Knowledge of specialized testing equipment, high voltage safety equipment, and specialized high voltage material for repair of high voltage equipment. Knowledge of indicators, controllers and other process sensing equipment.

Knowledge of radio telemetry systems with interface to electro-mechanical controls.

Knowledge of manufacturers and their equipment for interfacing new technical equipment with old existing equipment.

Able to read and interpret intricate electrical control schematics, blueprints, piping layouts, single line drawings, with some knowledge of electronic schematics.

Skill in the use of tools, materials and equipment used in the electrical trade.

Good knowledge and understanding of regulatory compliance necessary to successfully perform job responsibilities, including National Electrical Codes (NEC).

Good knowledge and understanding of computer systems and software applications required to perform job duties.

Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills in order to interact professionally and effectively with staff, management, and other stakeholders.

Able to explain facts, policies, and practices.
