Main Purpose of the Role

The HVAC/Refrigeration Group handles comfort complaints, and preventive maintenance, repair of ice machines, refrigerators & freezer units, low temperature refrigeration systems, environmental chambers, incubators, air dryers, lab heating and cooling equipment dehumidifiers, stability chambers. The HVAC/R Mechanic II will work on the HVAC/R systems and equipment and control systems. Will troubleshoot mechanical problems and perform all required tasks and make repairs necessary to return the equipment to operation in a timely manner. Good judgment is necessary in matters pertaining to customer satisfaction and quality of services performed. This primary function is to provide support to the manufacturing, research and development laboratories, warehouses, and office facilities that make up Abbott Park and its associated owned and leased Lake County facilities.

Main Responsbilities

  • Exercises ability and job knowledge to independently perform and understand hardware, operating systems and maintenance work on a variety of HVAC/R equipment and systems including production, lab, and facility equipment.

  • The HVAC/R Mechanic II will work as a multi-skilled tradesperson, doing mechanical, pipefitting, building maintenance and/or other work on special assignments as required and assigned the HVAC/R Mechanic II may be assigned as a lead person in a crew of two or more tradespersons on larger projects.

  • Assists in ensuring that GMP and safe work policies and procedures are followed and maintained at all times in accordance with established company policies.

  • Participates in work group team meetings and actively looks for methods and work processes that improve productivity, reduce costs, and increase customer satisfaction.

  • Work includes troubleshooting, ordering parts and installation of parts and material on equipment such as fractional horsepower motors, unit circulation fans, basic electrical devices associated with the control of the units, air conditioners, air handlers, compressors, pumps, walk in coolers and freezers, etc.

  • Performs preventative and demand maintenance work on all types of plant HVAC/R equipment Including fans, valves, actuators, variable air volume controllers, etc.

  • May install bearings, seals, belts, gaskets, etc. on HVAC/R equipment utilizing a variety of gauges, tools and test equipment including vacuum and pressure gauges, leak detectors, torque wrenches, multi-meters, amp meters, etc.

  • Does mechanical overhauls and performs preventive maintenance work on all types of plant HVAC equipment.

  • Will have understanding of HVAC/R theory and application to air handling systems in a commercial and/or industrial environment.

  • Must also have the ability to do, brazing and/or soldering of heating and cooling coils etc.

  • Will be able to perform troubleshooting and mechanical repairs and to install refrigeration equipment and accessories according to Abbott Engineering Standards.

  • On an independent basis, the individual must be able to evaluate the use of various resources and make knowledgeable decisions in regard to safety and company standards and policies.

  • Must know CMMS functions that pertain to refrigeration maintenance, PM and related activities.

  • The HVAC/R Mechanic II may report to the Group Leader, Section Manager or Department Manager.

  • Accountability / Scope: Failure to check, maintain, and/or operate systems according to quality assurance specifications would jeopardize product integrity and place Abbott in noncompliance with government agencies, including EPA FDA.

  • Errors in shutting down equipment or opening switches inappropriately could result in electrical equipment shutdown and resultant product losses in hundreds of thousands of dollars.

  • Accidentally energizing electrical/mechanical systems and/or equipment could have life or death implications.

  • Failure to schedule maintenance work with Production Management could have an adverse impact on customers’ operations/production.

  • Failure to adhere to operating instructions and/or safety policies could result in bodily injury and/or fatalities, property losses through fires, explosions, and chemical releases to self and others.

  • Errors in shutting down bio exhaust and clean room facilities, for example, could cause system shutdowns which would create immediate hazards to individuals.

  • Closing valves inappropriately could result in production and/or facility equipment shutdown and result in product losses in hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Requirements

  • Degree/Certificate: An associate’s or Technical Degree in HVAC, Controls

  • Universal EPA Certification is preferred

  • Type II or Type III EPA Certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Troubleshooting: Strong ability to diagnose and solve problems with electronic, digital, pneumatic controls, and (BAS) e.g., Johnson Controls (Metasys) systems desired.

  • HVAC & Controls: Knowledge of air and hydronic systems, chillers, boilers, and the associated controls

  • 3 phase electrical knowledge, certifications a plus

  • Microsoft office

     

The base pay for this position is

$20.85 – $41.75/hour

In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
