Position Summary
The Industrial Hygienist serves as an industrial hygiene and safety resource for clean-up operations as a result of past transuranic (TRU) waste processing activities. Specific duties may include, but are not necessarily limited to, the development, maintenance and implementation of IHS policies, procedures, and process related to ES&H Programs. The IHS Professional will collaborate with their peers and the workforce in developing solutions to complex IHS problems that require in-depth analysis of work activities.
This position reports to the ES&H Programs Manager
Essential Duties/Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):
- Providing Industrial Hygiene & Safety technical guidance to operations on environmental remediation problems and issues
- Conducting investigations of the site to determine the extent of contamination and ensuring that work will be in accordance with all federal, state regulatory requirements and within Industrial Hygiene & Safety policies
- Developing, Maintaining and revising IHS processes/programs necessary for ensuring compliance with technical and regulatory requirements.
- Appling the hierarchy of controls to eliminate or mitigate hazards while ensuring mission success.
- Monitoring and reviewing the Industrial Hygiene & Safety performance of subcontractors in the areas of work planning, work execution, installation, inspections, material control, and other areas of their work to confirm that they are performing in accordance with subcontract work program (Exhibit F process).
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):
- Expert knowledge, and demonstrated application, of department of energy (doe) and regulatory requirements related to industrial hygiene and safety in a research environment
- Expert knowledge of and experience implementing industrial hygiene/safety-related risk assessments and corrective actions.
- Expert knowledge and application of techniques and procedures for industrial hygiene exposure assessment (both qualitative and quantitative), to include sampling and sampling
- Expert experience with techniques/instrumentation, sample analysis, and selection/implementation of controls.
- Expert skill in the preparation and communication of industrial hygiene/safety technical information to technical and non-technical personnel.
- Expert knowledge and ability to apply the hierarchy of controls to eliminate or mitigate hazards while ensuring mission success.
- Expert experience and skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions to industrial hygiene and safety related problems.
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively within a team environment and provide excellent customer service.
- Expert knowledge and application of integrated safety management, integrated work management, and other industrial hygiene and safety procedures.
- Expert knowledge and ability to evaluate hazard controls and exposure data in order to make recommendations and improvements.
- Expert knowledge and ability to develop, review, and evaluate site-specific safety/health programs and requirements.
- Expert experience and skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions and recommending solutions to problems affecting industrial hygiene and safety.
- · Expert ability to represent the organization and laboratory on various internal or external boards and committees.
Education and Experience Required:
Level 5:
Bachelor's degree in technical discipline (Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physiology, etc) combined with at least 14 years of relevant experience. However, a combination of education and relevant experience wherein the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the position's duties and responsibilities have been adequately demonstrated is acceptable.
Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) the American Board of Industrial Hygiene and/or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred.
Work Environment / Physical Demands:
Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Light to moderate lifting may be required for packages and other items, ability to walk short distances, may be regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, reach, stoop, kneel, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and keyboard.
