Job Summary:
Under general supervision, the Maintenance Technician Apprentice is trained in the full range of maintenance and repair duties on all pieces of production machinery. This individual must demonstrate a high degree of skill and proficiency in repair methods required to maintain a high level of machine efficiency. Apprentices are required to complete a 14-month training program, culminating in a comprehensive equipment assessment. Those who successfully demonstrate the required proficiency will advance to the Maintenance Technician position. Candidates are permitted a maximum of two attempts to pass this assessment . Progression is evaluated based on skill acquisition, safety adherence, troubleshooting capability, and ability to independently perform assigned maintenance tasks. Successful completion leads to promotion to Maintenance Technician with increased responsibility and pay.
Responsibilities:
- Repair or replace defective equipment parts using hand tools and power tools
- Understand electrical, air pressure, air flow and equipment repair and maintenance processes
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on all production equipment to ensure that machines continue to run at a high performance and physical condition of machines do not deteriorate
- Inspect drives motors, electrical, air pressures, vacuum line, drive belts, check fluid levels, replace filters, perform other maintenance activities
- Use tools ranging from common hand and power tools, such as hammers, hoists, saws, drills, and wrenches, to precision measuring instruments and electrical and electronic testing devices
- Assemble, install and/or repair wiring, electrical and electronic components, plumbing systems, machinery, and equipment
- Diagnose mechanical problems and determine how to correct them, check blueprints, repair manuals, and parts catalogs as necessary
- Inspect, operate, and test machinery and equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions
- Record and document maintenance and repair work with the Operational Lead
- Clean and lubricate shafts, bearings, gears, and other parts of machinery
- Dismantle devices to gain access to and remove defective parts, using hoists, hand tools, and power tools
- Plan and lay out repair work using diagrams, drawings, blueprints, maintenance manuals and schematic diagrams
- Requisition parts, supplies, and equipment from catalogs and suppliers, or obtain them from storerooms.
- Coordinate and work with Machine Operators to observe machine operation and detect workpiece defects or machine malfunctions, adjusting machines as necessary
- Work in a safe manner, following all safety rules and procedures
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as business needs require
- Able to lay out materials to be cut or joined in the best order for efficient working even in tight working spaces
- Experienced selecting the most suitable welding method for the job ‘particular requirements
- Great hand-to-eye coordination and the ability to work accurately under time constraints
- Basic understanding of PLC or HMI programming
- Assure Food Safety. Report on Food Safety violations
- Ability to program and install motor controls and replace a variety of motors/servos.
- Must practice good housekeeping and inventory controls to help ensure the proper organization of workspaces and storeroom
Comply with all company policies and procedures, demonstrating a strong commitment to Food Safety and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in support of product integrity, operational excellence, and regulatory compliance.
Educational Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license to perform essential job duties
- 3-7 years of preventative maintenance/mechanical experience
- Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic systems
- Production line or processing equipment experience
Experience Requirements:
- Willing to work 3rd shift
- Strong understanding of mechanical function
- Ability to inspect equipment, identify the root cause of malfunctions, and troubleshoot defects
- Proficient with all hand and power tools
- Understanding of hydraulics, motors and pumps
- Certified forklift driver
- Experienced with scissor lifts
- Proficiently read drawings, system layouts, schematics, and technical manuals
- Basic understanding of electrical
- Experience with pneumatic systems
- Ability to work at heights up to 30ft
- Ability to perform physically demanding work, including climbing ladders, working in narrow spaces, and lifting heavy equipment
- Welding experience a plus
- Understanding of gas trains and water trains a plus
- Maxon Burner experience a plus
- HMI experience a plus
- Must be able to obtain material handling equipment certifications
- Must be able to obtain First Aid certification
- Spanish-English bilingual skills preferred but not required
