Job Summary:

The Infection Prevention Coordinator (IP) is responsible for identifying, investigating, monitoring, and reporting healthcare-associated infections. The IP collaborates with teams and individuals to create infection prevention strategies for HAI reduction, provide feedback and sustain infection prevention strategies.

 

Accountabilities:

• 1. Implement and educate on initiatives to reduce the risk of patient and associates from acquiring infections.

• a. Develop and review hospital-wide infection prevention and control policies, procedures, and protocols

• b. Assist with education and implementation of infection prevention policies, procedures, and protocols

• c. in conjunctions with director, develop an annual surveillance plan based on the previous year’s risk assessment, population(s) served, services provided, and analysis of surveillance data

• d. Collaborate with the Occupational Health Department to review policies and procedures associated with hospital associates.

• 2. Conduct surveillance practices to monitor and track infectious diseases throughout the facility and report findings to hospital committees, medical associates and hospital leadership.

• a. Report all HAI’s through the NHSN database and mandated infectious diseases to the PA State NEDSS system

• b. Review all positive culture results using the Sentri 7 electronic surveillance system and analyze data to identify HAI’s, outbreaks, trends, and potential source of infection.

• c. Identify and implement guidelines and recommendations to prevent transmission of infectious and communicable diseases

• d. Perform Infection Prevention rounds in all departments providing patient care

• e. Attend assigned committees

• 3. Provide infection prevention education to medical, clinical, and no-clinical associates and community Members.

• a. Educate hospital associates regarding Infection Prevention techniques and practices through new associate orientation, RAHRE, and as requested.

• b. Collaborate with Patient Education to develop brochures and other printed material on Infection Prevention topics.

• c. release quarterly Infection Connection Newsletter highlighting Infection Prevention updates and topics of interest from healthcare associates

• 4. Collaborate with unit Educators to develop associate education on Infection Prevention Evidence Based Practices for infection prevention

• 5. Has knowledge of infection prevention with regulatory agency programs including but not limited to:

◦ · CMS Value-based Purchasing (VBP) and Hospital-acquired Conditions (HAC)

◦ · Joint Commission

◦ · Leapfrog Safety Initiatives

◦ · OSHA

◦ · Pennsylvania Department of Health

• Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures

• Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization

 

Qualifications:

• RN graduate from accredited school of nursing
• minimum of 2 years Infection Prevention experience
• Bachelor’s Degree BSN or a microbiologist
• Attendance at Infection Prevention Training Course
• Active member of the Association of Practitioners of Infection Prevention (APIC) within 6 months of employment.

 

Licenses, Registrations and Certifications:

• IF an RN: licensure in Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of State Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affair
• IF NOT an RN: Professional Certification Credentials, CIC, through the Certification Board of Infection Prevention, Inc. preferred or acquired within 2 years of hire.
