Infrastructure Engineer, Azure Virtual Desktop
We are seeking an experienced Infrastructure Engineer / AVD / VDI Systems Administrator to design, deploy, configure, and manage enterprise virtual desktop infrastructure within a Microsoft Azure environment.
 
This position requires deep hands-on experience with PowerShell scripting and automation, Azure Virtual Desktop, AVD, and networking principles supporting virtual desktop connectivity and performance.
 
The ideal candidate will have at least 6 years of relevant infrastructure and systems administration experience and a strong technical background supporting highly available, scalable virtual desktop environments.

  1. PowerShell Scripting and Automation, strong hands-on experience developing and maintaining scripts for provisioning, configuration, monitoring, and administrative tasks
  2. Azure Virtual Desktop, AVD, experience supporting both personal, dedicated, and pooled host pool configurations
  3. Networking Principles, strong knowledge of networking concepts required to ensure virtual desktop connectivity, security, and performance
 
Key Responsibilities
Azure Virtual Desktop and VDI Infrastructure
  • Design, deploy, configure, and manage Azure Virtual Desktop, AVD, environments
  • Administer host pools, session hosts, application groups, and workspace configurations
  • Support both personal, dedicated, and pooled host pool configurations
  • Administer and optimize virtual desktop infrastructure, VDI, environments
  • Ensure high availability, performance, scalability, and reliability of virtual desktop services
  • Monitor infrastructure performance and troubleshoot complex VDI issues
 
Networking and Security
  • Apply strong knowledge of networking principles as they relate to virtual desktop connectivity and performance
  • Support and troubleshoot DNS, VPN, ExpressRoute, and Network Security Groups, NSGs
  • Identify and resolve network-related issues impacting virtual desktop users and services
  • Ensure infrastructure configurations align with security and operational requirements
 
Endpoint and Systems Management
  • Manage Windows Server operating systems and their integration with Azure services
  • Support Windows Server environments associated with VDI workloads
  • Utilize SCCM / OSD and Microsoft Intune / AutoPilot for system provisioning and configuration management
  • Support patch deployment and lifecycle management of virtual desktop images
 
Scripting and Automation
  • Develop and maintain PowerShell automation scripts
  • Automate provisioning, configuration, monitoring, and administrative processes
  • Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency through automation
  • Utilize PowerShell, Python, or equivalent scripting technologies to streamline infrastructure management
 
Required Qualifications
  • 6+ years of relevant infrastructure engineering, systems administration, or VDI experience
  • Strong hands-on PowerShell scripting and automation experience
  • Extensive experience with Azure Virtual Desktop, AVD
  • Experience managing personal, dedicated, and pooled AVD host pool configurations
  • Strong knowledge of networking principles supporting virtual desktop environments
  • Experience with DNS, VPN, ExpressRoute, and NSGs
  • Experience administering Windows Server operating systems
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage and optimize enterprise virtual desktop infrastructure
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a technical team
 
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Equivalent professional experience may be considered in lieu of a formal degree.
 
Nice-to-Have Skills
  • Experience designing and conducting technical training
  • Knowledge transfer planning and implementation experience
  • Nerdio experience
  • SCCM / OSD experience
  • Microsoft Intune / AutoPilot experience
  • Python or additional scripting experience
 
Work Location and Hybrid Requirements
This position is open to local candidates in the Austin, TX area only. Work will be performed in a hybrid environment, with approximately 20% to 60% onsite work. Candidates must be available to work onsite in Austin for a minimum of 1 day per week, with 2 to 3 days per week onsite preferred.
 
Contract Information
The position is currently budgeted through August 31, 2027. The potential for extension beyond that date is currently unknown.
