Ink Room Technician – Job Description

Position Summary:
The Ink Room Technician is responsible for mixing, managing, and maintaining all inks used in production. This role ensures accurate color matching, organizes ink inventory, and supports production needs by providing timely formulations and technical assistance. This position requires strong attention to detail, dependability, and the ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

General Responsibilities

  • Maintain dependable, prompt, and regular attendance.

  • Perform job-related tasks as assigned by the Team Leader or Supervisor.

  • Adapt to changes in job duties according to company needs.

Ink Mixing & Color Management

  • Mix inks according to required formulas and match colors accurately.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve ink-related issues.

  • Retain wet samples, drawdowns, and color documentation.

  • Assign and manage color numbers for production.

  • Approve all ink formulations before releasing to production.

  • Ensure formulas are current and updated for each customer.

Department Operations & Planning

  • Plan, organize, and prioritize daily operations based on production schedules.

  • Provide technical direction, support, and feedback to team members.

  • Make adjustments to press-side materials as needed.

  • Coordinate with the Graphics Department for ink numbers on new and existing items.

Inventory & Materials Management

  • Maintain inventory of ink, solvent, buckets, and all raw materials needed for the ink room and pressroom.

  • Communicate with vendors to address supply concerns.

  • Maintain proper storage, usage, and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials following company procedures.

  • Keep accurate equipment maintenance records and schedules.

Documentation & Communication

  • Maintain customer files containing specifications, color swatches, formulas, and finished product information.

  • Schedule dirty drum and bucket pickups per company guidelines.

  • Work with production, plant management, and office personnel regularly.

  • May visit customer or vendor sites for projects or business needs.

Teamwork & Flexibility

  • Assist in other Ink Room roles when staff is absent.

  • Handle multiple tasks and changing priorities.

  • Support company goals and contribute to team success.

  • Willingness to work extra hours when required.


Physical Requirements

  • Manual and finger dexterity to operate tools, equipment, computers, and paperwork.

  • Ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods on concrete floors.

  • Ability to bend, stoop, and climb stairs regularly.

  • Frequently lift up to 10 lbs; occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Must have close, distant, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color vision.

  • Ability to handle a moderate to loud noise environment.

  • Occasional exposure to fumes, odors, dust, chemicals, cramped spaces, heights, oil, and grease.

  • Occasional travel by car or plane.

  • Must have a valid Driver’s License to operate a company vehicle.


Work Environment

  • Moderate to loud noise level.

  • Frequent interaction with the Plant Manager, Production Supervisor, Leads, and other production/office staff.

  • Exposure to typical manufacturing conditions including chemicals and machinery.
