Job Description

Ensures phlebotomists are collecting specimens from patients appropriately, obtaining prior unsuccessful sample collections, communicates with nursing staff to solve problems, provides leadership and guidance to inpatient phlebotomists, leads workflow and monitors all zones to ensure timely completion of draws, coaches phlebotomists on opportunities to improve patient care and draw technique, provides training and performance feedback for new phlebotomists, provides backup coverage for specimen processing as needed; also performs clerical, quality, housekeeping, and miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

Blood sample collection:

  • Able to perform all duties required of an inpatient phlebotomist
  • Provides hands on support to phlebotomy personnel in the performance of operational activities as required to meet service needs
  • Leads workflow throughout hospital to complete all blood draws in a timely manner
  • Acts as the on-site technical resource to all phlebotomists for proper specimen collection protocol and other associated tasks


Leadership and communication:

  • Provides day-to-day supervision of phlebotomy personnel
  • Monitors call offs and adjusts workflow as necessary
  • Assists supervisor and manager in creating training plans and schedules for new phlebotomists
  • Monitors and coaches phlebotomists on daily and monthly productivity expectations
  • Provides feedback on the performance of phlebotomists to assist supervisor in writing performance evaluations
  • Performs regular competency observations and sign offs
  • Conducts informative and constructive huddles regularly to maintain communication with the team
  • Utilizes communication boards for schedule updates and other important announcements
  • Ensures all phlebotomists are logged into department phones and assigned zones
  • Coaches phlebotomists on phone etiquette as needed
  • Responds to email and other communication promptly and professionally
  • Ensures nursing staff are informed of any staffing challenges or other issues pertaining to timely specimen collection
  • Provides regular status updates for any issues that occur to laboratory leadership.
  • Assists phlebotomists in resolving conflict that impedes optimum performance or interferes with quality patient care
  • Provides recognition to team members on a job well done
  • Fosters and encourages an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration

  • Promptly answers complaints from nursing staff to address barriers to patient care


Technical and clerical requirements:

  • Provides backup support for preanalytical sample processing when needed
  • Performs bone marrow sample collections
  • Ensures compliance with the clinical laboratory's Quality Management Program and assist in entering and answering Internal Quality Error (IQEs)
  • Assists Quality leadership in answering formal complaints from nursing staff
  • Serves as a communication link between the technical team and the department employees.
  • Participates in regular policy review and communicates the need for required changes
  • Coordinates activities and prepares for regulatory inspections and audits
  • Ensures carts and stock room are free of expired supplies
  • Provides preventive maintenance to laboratory equipment as required
  • Participates in inventory management and communicates any issues immediately with supply chain personnel
  • Maintains currency in the field through participation in continuing education opportunities
  • Ability to utilize basic Microsoft office applications
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

EDUCATION:



High school diploma or GED required; completion of formal phlebotomy training program or equivalent is required.



YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:



Minimum of two years of phlebotomy experience or a minimum of six months experience as an Inpatient Phlebotomist within TCHHN required.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: Ability to read and comprehend written information required; ability to effectively and efficiently perform a variety of job duties in a stressful, fast paced environment is required; Phlebotomy skills required; emotional intelligence and leadership skills required; ability to give and receive feedback required.

Critical thinking skills to support quality decision-making.



Ability to effectively use basic computer applications, such as Microsoft Word and Excel.



LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:



Phlebotomy certification preferred.
