    Job Description

    This is an UNPAID internship through the DoD SkillBridge Program for transitioning active-duty US military personnel. DoD SkillBridge Internships are available to help transitioning active-duty military personnel gain real-world experience in the work force sometime during their final 180 days of active-duty service. The intern will actively train on meaningful projects and work closely with a mentor and with senior company leadership. HII Mission Technologies Internship programs are focused on placing transitioning military into internships that require KSAs, Education & Military Training similar to their current or previous military jobs; positions that could easily transition over to a full-time regular and permanent job with HII.

    Objective

    The SkillBridge intern will train as an Inside Machinist (Marine Mechanic) within HII-Mission Technologies, reporting to a designated HII Supervisor, with the goal of learning the performing as an Inside Machinist at HII Mission Technologies SEMAT Hawaii, capable of independently machining, fabricating, and refurbishing shipboard components while providing technical support to USN Surface Ships at Pearl Harbor. The intern will be assigned special projects as needed.

    Desired End State (3-4 month target)

    At the end of four months, the intern will gain a deeper understanding:

    Machine Shop Operations Proficiency

    • Demonstrate competency in setting up and operating conventional lathes, milling machines, band saws, and drill presses
    • Apply proper speeds, feeds, coolants, and cutting techniques for various materials
    • Execute machining operations including turning, drilling, milling, boring, tapping, threading, and grinding to specification

    Technical Documentation & Quality Control

    • Read and interpret ship drawings, technical manuals, and engineering documentation
    • Utilize precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, gauges, comparators) to maintain dimensional accuracy
    • Develop controlled work packages, test documents, and technical reports per Navy standards

    Shipboard Component Fabrication & Customer Interface

    • Fabricate and refurbish shipboard components using templates and technical specifications
    • Provide work direction and technical guidance to shipboard personnel
    • Interface effectively with Navy customers and manage project schedules and deliverables
    • Mission Technologies will benefit from the military background of the SkillBridge intern and considers the SkillBridge internship an overall positive experience.

    Assumptions/Restrictions

    • If candidate is selected and approved, SkillBridge Intern can travel in conjunction with this internship; HII Mission Technologies.
    • SkillBridge Intern will be available during core hours for critical meetings and training.

    Essential Job Responsibilities

    Training Location: Pearl Harbor, HI

    Weeks 1-2: Orientation & Safety Foundation

    Focus: Facility familiarization, safety protocols, basic tool proficiency

    • Complete HII onboarding, security clearance initiation, Navy shipyard access requirements
    • Safety certification: machine shop hazards, PPE, confined space, respirator fit testing
    • Introduction to hand tools inventory and basic bench tool operations

    Milestone: Safety certifications complete; base access approved

    Weeks 3-4: Lathe Operations & Precision Measurement

    Focus: Conventional lathe setup and fundamental turning operations

    • Operate lathe for facing, turning, drilling, threading with supervision
    • Learn speeds/feeds selection, tooling setup, coolant application
    • Practice precision measurement using micrometers, calipers, thread gauges

    Milestone: Complete basic lathe project to tolerance specifications

    Weeks 5-6: Milling & Advanced Machining

    Focus: Milling machine operations and multi-axis work

    • Set up and operate vertical/horizontal milling machines for slotting, facing, boring
    • Execute drilling operations on floor-type drill press; operate band saws safely
    • Apply advanced measuring techniques using sine plates, comparators, dial indicators

    Milestone: Fabricate multi-operation component meeting Navy specifications

    Weeks 7-8: Technical Documentation & Blueprint Reading

    Focus: Navy technical standards and documentation systems

    • Interpret ship drawings, technical manuals, engineering specifications
    • Develop controlled work packages and quality inspection documentation

    Milestone: Independently plan machining sequence from ship drawings

    Weeks 9-10: Shipboard Component Fabrication

    Focus: Real-world component refurbishment and repair

    • Machine, fabricate, refurbish actual shipboard components under journeyman supervision
    • Perform quality inspections using go/no-go gauges and dimensional verification

    Milestone: Complete component fabrication project from start to finish

    Weeks 11-12: Customer Interface & Program Completion

    Focus: Professional skills and independent operations

    • Shadow customer interactions; practice briefing techniques with Navy personnel
    • Manage small fabrication project including scheduling, reporting, delivery
    • Demonstrate proficiency across all machine tools and quality control processes

    Milestone: Final competency assessment; transition to full-time employment offer

    Continuous Throughout: Weekly progress reviews, physical conditioning for shipboard work (30+ lb lifting), professional development

    Minimum Qualifications

    Active-Duty Military ONLY within final 180 days of active-duty service. Applications accepted within final 12-months of active-duty US military service. Education and Experience dependent on Program of Instruction.

    • Must be able to obtain SECRET security clearance
    • 4 - 6 years of related experience, to include specific systems expertise. Prefer technical/professional certifications.
    • Experience operating a lathe required.
    • Ability to read ship drawings, technical documents, and manuals.
    • Machine, fabricate, and refurbish shipboard components using templates and technical documentation.
    • Proficient with mechanical equipment and tools for ship repairs.
    • Must provide own hand tools per trade specialty.
