Minimum duties and responsibilities
• Stay up to date on AAR and FRA rules and regulations as well as customer requirements;
• Conduct Inspections of Rolling Stock (freight cars, flatcars, tank cars, etc.). Inspect rolling stock for defects or evidence of wear; inspect rolling stock for compliance with industry standards;
• Apply AAR/FRA rules to the inspection and articulate those through the write up process for estimation;
• Preparation of reports for Inspections performed;
• Read precision instruments, gauges, blueprints, technical drawings, repair manuals and work orders to ensure work is completed correctly;
• Calculating, typing, measuring, parts identification;
• Operate various power tools or pneumatic tools, blue flags, locks, harnesses;
• Effective communication with internal and external customers;
• Working with engineering drawings for car modifications;
• Operate company vehicle;
• Practice Safe Work Habits. Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures, wear prescribed safety apparel; take appropriate action when conditions threaten safety of self or coworkers; ensure equipment and work area are in safe operating condition before starting work.
Advanced duties and responsibilities
• Inspect railcars and troubleshoot mechanical issues;
• Must be flexible to shop needs and willing to learn and help in other departments as needed.
Qualifications and Experience
• Prefer High School Education or GED;
• Prefer 2 years of freight car repair experience;
• Mechanical aptitude;
• Read precision instruments and gauges;
• Read and understand technical drawings and blueprints;
• Proven ability to work safely with minimal supervision;
• Able to complete work functions with minimal direction;
• Must maintain a valid driver's license;
• Thorough knowledge of AAR office and Field Manual Rules along with FRA rules;
• A diverse and strong working knowledge in all Freight car types;
• Must have strong communication skills.

Essential and Physical Activities Functions
• Strength -
o Be able to push, pull or carry up to 50 lbs.
• Motion -
o Constant standing and walking;
o Frequent bending, crouching, stooping, kneeling, squatting, overhead reaching, climbing ladders;
o Frequent work below waist level and above shoulder level.
• Vision/Hearing Requirements -
o High noise levels (above 85 decibels).
• Work Environment -
o Work from heights over 6";
o Work on varied surfaces (concrete floors, gravel, rail car floors);
o Work around and operate overhead cranes and mobile equipment.
• Emotional Demands -
o Must be able to work alone and in team setting.
• Safety -
o This is a safety Sensitive Positions. It requires work on and around rails and heavy equipment. This
Position requires strict adherence to safety policies (i.e blue flag) and use of all PPE requirements such
that include hand, head, eye, hand, ear and foot protection.
