Description

The Housing Inspector is responsible for conducting inspections of residential properties throughout St. Clair County to ensure compliance with Chapter 29 of the St. Clair County Property Maintenance Code. This includes evaluating housing conditions, identifying violations, and enforcing standards related to safety, sanitation, and structural integrity.

Examples of Duties

  • Conduct routine and complaint-based inspections of residential properties.
  • Ensure compliance with local housing codes, including structural, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical standards.
  • Issue violation notices and compliance orders when necessary.
  • Document inspection findings with detailed reports and photographs.
  • Educate property owners and tenants on code requirements and corrective actions.
  • Coordinate with other departments or agencies regarding enforcement actions.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections and enforcement activities.

Typical Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; additional training in building construction or inspection preferred.
  • Experience in residential construction, property maintenance, or code enforcement.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
