Job Description

Job title: Inspector

Location: Brooklyn Center, MN Duration: 9+ months (Possibility of extension)

Job Role

· Perform routine destructive analyses for production using Destructive Analysis laboratory processes.

· Prioritize, perform and report weld analyses for production verification, equipment qualification, laser operator certification, and development support to include as needed:

  • Log-in, in-progress analysis status, maintaining traceability of samples and analysis reporting
  • Metallographic sample preparation, sectioning, mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching
  • Perform weld penetration and thermal damage analysis
  • Decide to release or hold manufacturing product lots for shipping
  • Report results

· Assist engineers in qualifications and problem solving weld quality issues including:

  • Document problems
  • Capture unusual weld penetrations using computer image analysing equipment/software.
  • Send images to appropriate personnel to be reviewed

· Schedule workload and allocate resources for analyses so that they are executed within a timely manner and provide detailed and quality results.

· Work under direction of Destructive Analysis technicians for non-routine analysis.

· Assist in developing/improving and documenting weld analysis methods and procedures.

· Perform general laboratory responsibilities including:

  • Set up, clean, troubleshoot, verify calibration and operate laboratory equipment and instruments such as microscopes, measuring devices, grinding/polishing machines, precision saw, CNC, mill and others
  • Maintaining records and samples identification. Archiving and disposition of samples.
  • Preparing chemical solutions
  • Maintaining the inventory of consumable supplies
  • Interacting with vendors and recommending capital improvement purchases

· Continuously improve skills in the Destructive Analysis laboratory processes by continued education and training, vendor contact, technical reading, and experimentation with new techniques.

Knowledge/Education

· High School Diploma or 2 year trade school or college in chemistry or metallurgical technologies, or related science (preferred)

Job Experience

· 2 years' experience in metallurgical sample preparation and analysis – Preferred.
