Job Summary

As part of the education team, under the general direction of the classroom teacher, with support from the administration, the Teacher Assistant helps plan and participates in classroom, playground, and general school activities. These activities are designed to foster or enhance all areas of the child s development.

The description of tasks is not intended to outline every last detail of the Instructional Assistant position. It will

serve to give a general outline of the duties related to the job

  • Discuss assigned duties with classroom teacher in order to coordinate instructional efforts.
  • Prepare lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations.
  • Present subject matter to students under the direction and guidance of teachers.
  • Tutor and assist children individually or in small groups in order to help them master assignments and to

reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers.

  • Supervise students in classrooms, halls, cafeterias, school yards, and gym, or on field trips as instructed

by the classroom teacher or administration

  • Substitute for the classroom teacher as needed.
  • Distribute teaching materials such as textbooks, workbooks, papers, and pencils to students.
  • Distribute tests and homework assignments, and collect them when they are completed.
  • Enforce administration policies and rules governing students.
  • Grade homework and tests, and compute and record results, using answer sheets or electronic marking

devices.

  • Observe students performance, and record relevant data to assess progress.
  • Provide extra assistance to students with special needs as needed.
  • Take class attendance, and maintain attendance records.
  • Attend part time staff meetings, trainings and school events as needed.
  • Type, file, and duplicate materials.

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum requirements are graduation from High School, or GED. College coursework preferred.
