Schedule: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday; 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. (Must have reliable transportation to travel between sites independently).

Under supervision, to assist teachers in physical education activities and instruction; to instruct and reinforce instruction of students individually and in groups in accordance with instructions; to assist in preparing, distributing, storing, and accounting for all equipment; to perform routine clerical duties; and to perform related work as required.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCTION

A high school diploma or equivalent with 2 years minimum college units and any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skill is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be:

Experience:

  • One year of experience working with elementary and/or preferably middle school children in a recreational or physical education environment.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Two years of college (48 semester units), an AA Degree, or pass the district's NCLB Test.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Sets up equipment for P.E. activities;
  • Supervises and encourages students;
  • Accounts for all equipment;
  • Maintains routine records;
  • Orders equipment, when necessary;
  • Performs first aid, as needed;
  • Maintains order and disciplines students when necessary;
  • Supervises locker room;
  • Monitors progress of students and discusses with teacher;
  • Assists students with special needs;
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Practical learning patterns and behavior;
  • Concepts of child and adolescent development and of the respective behavior characteristics;
  • General needs and behavior of students at the middle school level;
  • Correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation;
  • Children's recreational activities, games, and sports;
  • Physical education procedures and equipment;
  • Basic record-keeping techniques;
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.

  • Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • This type of work involves standing most of the time, but will also involve running, walking or sitting for brief periods.
  • Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.
