The Instructional Designer provides leadership, expert consultation, and pedagogical guidance to full-time, part-time, and dual enrollment faculty in the design, development, and continuous improvement of high-quality courses across all delivery formats (online, hybrid, HyFlex, and traditional face-to-face). Reporting to the Dean of Academic Innovation and Partnerships, the Instructional Designer serves as a collaborative partner to advance student success and champion inclusive design, assisting the Dean in implementing the college's strategic priorities for distance learning. The Instructional Designer is expected to actively pursue professional development, maintaining deep expertise in established and emerging educational technologies, learning analytics, and evidence-based digital pedagogy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Course Design & Faculty Consultation: Collaborate with faculty subject matter experts to design engaging, learner-centered courses using backward design, authentic assessment practices, and robust active learning strategies.
  • Professional Development Delivery: Design and facilitate the online pedagogy course for faculty. Develop and facilitate workshops, webinars, and one-on-one consultations regarding instructional best practices and educational technology integration.
  • Accessibility & Quality Assurance: Ensure developed course materials adhere to federal digital accessibility standards. Manage institutional quality assurance processes using established rubrics.
  • Strategic Planning Support: Assist the Dean in implementing and evaluating distance learning initiatives, scaling multi-modality course offerings, and certifying courses/programs to optimize student engagement and retention.
  • Emerging Technology Evaluation: Collaborate in researching, piloting, and recommending innovative educational software, multimedia tools, and generative AI integrations that ethically support and enhance teaching and learning.
  • Project Management: Manage multiple course development and instructional design projects simultaneously, ensuring clear communication, deadline adherence, and alignment with institutional goals.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Master's degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Curriculum and Instruction, Adult Learning, or a closely related academic discipline.
  • Instructional Design Expertise: In-depth knowledge of adult learning theories (andragogy), backward design, learning psychology, and contemporary instructional design models.
  • LMS Proficiency: Demonstrated advanced proficiency with Learning Management Systems, preferably Canvas, including its native tools, third-party integrations, and course design software.
  • Accessibility & UDL: Practical knowledge of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and digital accessibility compliance standards.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with a proven ability to collaborate effectively with faculty of varying technical proficiency levels in a team-oriented environment.
  • Project Management: Strong organizational and project management skills, including the ability to balance multiple timelines and deliverables independently.
  • Mission Alignment: A clear understanding of and commitment to the community college mission.
  • Background Check: Successful completion and passing of a comprehensive criminal background investigation.

Additional Considerations:

  • Experience: 2 or more years of professional instructional design experience in a higher education setting, preferably within a community college.
  • Teaching Experience: Experience teaching or facilitating training in higher education, ideally using online, hybrid, or HyFlex modalities.
  • QA Certification: Formal certification or extensive experience working with course evaluation frameworks, such as a Quality Matters (QM) Peer Reviewer or Quality Matters Coordinator.
  • Multimedia & Authoring Tools: Hands-on experience with e-learning authoring tools and multimedia/graphic design tools.
  • Innovative Pedagogy: Familiarity with data-informed course design, learning analytics, and the ethical use of generative AI tools to assist in creating meaningful, student-centered content.
