Instructional Designer

Location: Livermore, CA

Onsite Flexibility: Hybrid 90% remote / 10% travel in service territory

Contract Details

  • Position Type: Contract
  • Contract Duration: 9 months (with potential to extend, not guaranteed)
  • Start: April 13, 2026
  • Pay Rate: $60.00 $65.00 / Hour (USD)
  • Shift / Schedule: Monday Friday, 8:00 AM 5:00 PM (PST)
  • Travel Requirements: Quarterly travel required to client locations, including the Sierra region. Occasional overnight stays may be necessary to support client meetings and project milestones. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.
  • Work Authorization: Applicants must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.

Job Summary

This is a Contract Instructional Designer role for 2026, focused on designing and developing training programs for apprenticeships in the Power Generation utility industry. The role operates under the direction of the Senior Instructional Designer and requires strong collaboration with subject matter experts and stakeholders to build technically rigorous, effective learning experiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop instructor-led and on-the-job training for apprenticeships in the Power Generation utility industry.
  • Develop learning materials for technical content, including hands-on practice activities, student guides, facilitator guides, scenarios, videos, assessments, simulations, and other instructional media.
  • Perform a detailed task analysis for each job function, business process, or system for which training will be developed.
  • Define learning objectives, and course structure aligned to stakeholder needs and to meet the constraints of the learning environment.
  • Work under the direction of the Senior Instructional Designer to apply company standards, guidelines, and templates.
  • Participate in milestone meetings with subject matter experts, including task analysis, alpha, beta, train the trainer, and pilot.
  • Engage with subject matter experts for ongoing content review and validation.
  • Available during office hours: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (PST) Monday Friday.

Required Skills

  • 3+ years experience developing instructor-led training for technical skills; such as electrical utilities or related industries.
  • Bachelor's degree in instructional design or education-related areas of study.
  • Skilled in instructional design methodologies and technical writing.
  • Experienced in PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Teams.
  • Self-manage assigned tasks and deadlines to complete deliverables on time.
  • Work closely with team and subject matter experts to proactively communicate concerns, issues, and risks.
  • Team player, willing to learn and receptive to feedback.
  • Strong communication skills and detail oriented.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in hydroelectric operations, general construction, and heavy equipment operation.
  • Master's degree in instructional design or education-related areas of study.
  • Experience with QuestionMark, Author-It, and/or Articulate 360.
  • Skilled in graphic design.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Prior PG&E Academy experience.

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

  • Primarily work from home.
  • Quarterly travel is required to client locations, including the Sierra region.
  • Occasional overnight stays may be necessary to support client meetings and project milestones.
  • Client will issue a laptop; any additional equipment needed is to be provided by the supplier.
  • No reimbursement for cell or internet.
  • Calls to be made via MS Teams or cell.
