The Instructional Designer provides comprehensive instructional design expertise, consultation, and development support for online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced learning environments. This role advances student-centered, accessible, and innovative teaching and learning practices by applying instructional design principles, learning theories, evidence-based pedagogy, and emerging academic technologies. The position collaborates with faculty and academic units to design, develop, and evaluate high-quality courses that align with institutional standards and support student success, engagement, and achievement.

Master's Degree in Instructional Design or a similar, related field.

  • Considerable knowledge of learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard) and educational technologies used in course development.
  • Advanced knowledge of instructional design principles and models, learning theories, and online, and in-person pedagogy, including their practical application in course development.
  • Considerable knowledge of accessibility standards (ADA, WCAG) and their application in learning environments.
  • Working knowledge of project management principles, tools, and practices in course development environments.
  • Working knowledge of quality assurance standards and frameworks used in course evaluation.
  • Advanced skills in designing aligned course content, including learning objectives, instructional activities, and assessments.
  • Proficient skills in managing course timelines, deliverables, and stakeholder communication across multiple projects.
  • Proficient skills in analyzing course needs and recommending instructional solutions.
  • Advanced skills in facilitating collaboration with faculty and cross-functional teams.
  • Proficient skills in integrating instructional technologies and innovative tools into course design.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify course design issues and recommend effective solutions to support course development.
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust to changing timelines, priorities, and project needs while maintaining progress.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage faculty using active listening and responsive communication.

  • Considerable experience in instructional design, in all learning modalities.
  • Working experience designing and developing online courses from planning through implementation.

  • Working experience managing course timelines, communication, and deliverables across multiple projects.
  • Considerable experience applying instructional design principles and models, and learning theories in practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple course development projects simultaneously while maintaining progress and meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply instructional design principles to real-world course development and recommend effective solutions.

Preferred Qualifications Conditions of Employment

This is a hybrid position in Norfolk, VA working a traditional work-week. The position requires three days on campus each week with two remote work days. The hybrid status is subject to change based on the needs of the institution.

The equipment provided to staff with approved telework agreements enables them to deliver vital services to University faculty, staff, and students from remote locations. Many of our operations can and should continue as usual, even when the main physical campus is closed. Therefore, all Digital Transformation & Technology employees with an approved telework agreement are generally expected to work during official University closures.
