Instructional Designer - Training Curriculum Development

Location: Livermore, CA

Onsite Flexibility: Hybrid 80% remote / 20% on-site for milestone meetings and course pilot delivery (Livermore site)

Contract Details

  • Position Type: Contract
  • Contract Duration: 9 months
  • Start: April 13, 2026
  • Pay Rate: $60.00 $65.00 / Hour (USD)
  • Shift / Schedule: Available during office hours: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (PST), Monday Friday
  • Travel Requirements: Quarterly travel required to client locations; occasional overnight stays may be necessary to support client meetings and project milestones. Mileage, lodging, and meals may be expensed for overnight travel with manager prior approval per GSA.gov rates.
  • Equipment: Laptop will be provided. Any additional equipment to be provided by the supplier. Personal cell phone used for calls or MS Teams (no cell phone expense reimbursement).
  • Work Authorization: Applicants must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.

Job Summary

This is a Contract Instructional Designer role supporting the design and development of instructor-led and on-the-job training for apprenticeships in the electric transmission and substation group. The designer will work under the direction of the Senior Instructional Designer to apply company standards, guidelines, and templates, and will collaborate closely with subject matter experts throughout the development lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop instructor-led and on-the-job training for apprenticeships in the electric transmission and substation group
  • Develop learning materials for technical content, including hands-on practice activities, student guides, facilitator guides, scenarios, job aids, assessments, simulations, and other instructional media
  • Perform a detailed task analysis for each job function, business process, or system for which training will be developed
  • Define learning objectives and course structure aligned to stakeholder needs and to meet the constraints of the learning environment
  • Work under the direction of the Senior Instructional Designer to apply company standards, guidelines, and templates
  • Participate in milestone meetings with subject matter experts, including task analysis, alpha, beta, train the trainer, and pilot
  • Engage with subject matter experts for ongoing content review and validation

Required Skills

  • Experience developing instructor-led training for technical skills; such as electrical utilities or related industries
  • Bachelor's degree or certification in instructional design or education-related areas of study
  • Skilled in instructional design methodologies and technical writing
  • Experienced in PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Teams
  • Self-manage assigned tasks and deadlines to complete deliverables on time
  • Work closely with team and subject matter experts to proactively communicate concerns, issues, and risks
  • Microsoft Suite expertise (PowerPoint, Word, Teams, etc.)
  • Author-it proficiency
  • Questionmark (or other authoring tools, LMS, and assessment tool familiarity)
  • Excellent time management skills, communication skills, and independent working skills
  • Excellent writing and publishing skills

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with QuestionMark, Author-It, and/or Articulate 360
  • Previous teaching experience
  • Any utility industry, PG&E, or Mosaic experience

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or certification in instructional design or education-related areas of study

Required Experience

  • Hands-on instructional design experience focused on technical training and instructor-led course design (not e-learning development)

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

  • Primarily work from home (80% remote)
  • 20% on-site presence required for milestone meetings and course pilot delivery at the Livermore site
  • Quarterly travel required to client locations
  • Occasional overnight stays may be necessary to support client meetings and project milestones
  • Local candidates (Bay Area) only
