JOB SUMMARY

We have an exciting opportunity for an Instructional Laboratory Technician II, Anatomy (OOC) located at our campus in Menifee, CA.

The Instructional Laboratory Technician II, under the general supervision of the Instructional Dean of Math and Science and the direct supervision of the Director of Instructional Laboratory Operations, prepares laboratories for class session activities in a face-to-face environment for the biological sciences. The incumbent responds to student questions and maintains a supportive and professional relationship with students, other instructional laboratory technicians, and faculty. The Instructional Laboratory Technician performs discipline-specific technical tasks.

Prepares and standardizes solutions and other laboratory materials; assists with the culturing and maintenance of microbial, protozoan, invertebrate and other living material; calibrates, maintains, and performs minor repairs and modifications to equipment; issues and replaces specialized materials used in the laboratories; organizes and maintains stockrooms; sets up and makes experiments available for instructors; is responsible for requisitions; receives, stores, and inventories chemicals, laboratory supplies, and equipment to ensure adequate stock of laboratory experiments; assists with the maintenance, storage and disposal of preserved specimens, organs, and cadavers; collects, stores and properly coordinates the disposal of biohazardous and chemical waste as required; and maintains accurate records of open accounts and department budget information.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• This recruitment is an OUT-OF-CLASS, temporary assignment which requires additional information in order for applicants to successfully apply. *
• Depending on your current salary, compensation is either Step 1 of the Out-of-Class assignment (Level 23) or a 9% increase to your current salary - whichever amount is greater to the employee.
• This position serves District-Wide; applicants may be assigned to any district facility. Work hours and worksite locations are subject to change depending on department needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Maintain the safety of the preparation area, laboratories, stockrooms, and classrooms by being alert and cautious of contamination by microorganisms, chemical spills, and other potential hazards
• Follow strict safety laboratory procedures as required by local and state regulations
• Demonstrates knowledge of the proper use of personal protective equipment and safety devises common in an academic laboratory setting
• Answers students' general questions about laboratory policies, procedures and methods
• Calculate the costs of materials from sources such as quotations and price lists; estimates and procures supplies and equipment by using acceptable budgetary procedures and guidelines
• Research products, makes purchases, receives and verifies shipment content; assembles, tests, and installs new equipment and instruments weighing less than 30lbs
• Requisitions and receives laboratory supplies, equipment, chemicals, biological specimens (living and preserved) and bacteriological cultures
• Assist the faculty in monitoring exams, quizzes and lab practicals
• Assist faculty with the coordination of planning and implementation of experimental design and preparation of laboratory exercises
• Assist with monitoring and implementation of safety hazards and laboratory procedures by students during their laboratory session
• Assist faculty with audio/visual operations in the laboratory
• Measure, mix and prepare culture media using standard methods. Use sterile technique to inoculate, transfer and maintain bacterial and other cultures. Be able to identify and correct for contamination
• Sterilize and dispose of bio-hazardous waste materials according to accepted safety and environmental standards
• Assembles, dismantles, cleans, replaces, and stores experimental apparatus and equipment used for laboratory experiments and demonstrations
• Returns materials, tools, and equipment to designated area and cleans up all laboratory equipment after each lab/field session
• Maintain specialized files including Safety Data Sheets (SDS), computerized inventories, and the storage location of chemicals, microscopes, biotechnology equipment, microorganism cultures, microscope slides and taxonomic specimens
• Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to lab equipment
• Notify designated personnel of needed major repairs, maintenance or any hazardous condition that exist in the laboratories; via submission of work order or contracted services as needed
• Keep current on matters concerning lab safety, hazardous material management, waste disposal procedures and assist with implementing procedures to comply with federal, state, and local laws and regulations for academic institutions
• Comply with MSJC Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP)
• May be required to drive students to and from assigned field trips in a college vehicle: support student field trip activities, and assist with monitoring the health and safety of all field trip participants; assemble, dispense, and collect field supplies and equipment
• Cultivate a supportive and professional atmosphere for students, faculty, staff and our communities
• Perform other duties, as appropriate to the classification as assigned by the department supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

The incumbent should possess knowledge of:

• Biological laboratory and field equipment in the areas of Biology, Microbiology, and/or Anatomy and Physiology
• Cadavers and preserved specimens
• Principles, practices, and procedures of aseptic transfer, microorganism culturing, and sterilization techniques as it pertains to Biology and Microbiology laboratory exercises
• Student educational processes and student needs
• Principles and practices of hazardous materials management, health and safety procedures, and hazardous waste disposal
• Sensitivity to the general needs of students, faculty, staff, and community from various ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds

The incumbent should possess skills in:

• Assisting students in understanding and applying the principles of biological laboratory sciences
• Working effectively as a team member
• Communicating effectively both orally and in writing
• Maintaining inventories, documentation, and records
• Time management, organization, and prioritization

The incumbent should possess the ability to:

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• An Associate of Science degree in Biological Sciences or related field (attach transcripts); AND
• A minimum of sixteen (16) semester units of college-level coursework in Biological Sciences including lab course work; AND
• Two (2) Years experience working in an educational or research laboratory; AND
• Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of our community college population

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• A Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences or a related field; AND
• Three (3) years of professional experience working in an educational or research laboratory setting; AND

• A valid California Driver's license

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Possession of, or the ability to obtain within 60-days of hire, a valid California drivers license with a driving record acceptable to the district.
• Must maintain a driving record that meets District requirements set forth in the current policy (AP6530) as it relates to allowable types of infractions and points.
• Prior to access to District vehicles, the incumbent must complete successful enrollment in the Districts Direct Pull program with the DMV.
• Be comfortable working in a normal laboratory and office setting.
• Be able to lift 30lbs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a laboratory or classroom setting and may travel from site to site. The incumbent may be exposed to or be tasked to handle hazardous chemicals. Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to minimize exposure to hazards is essential. The district will provide PPE equipment and training to reduce exposure to hazardous chemicals.

Physical: Primary function requires sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a laboratory or classroom; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach and twist; to lift carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight up to 30 pounds; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movements and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents; and to operate assigned equipment.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
