    Position Type: Instructional Student Assistant

    Term of Appointment: Academic Year 2025/2026 (Fall or Spring, or both)

    Hours of Appointment: up to 20 hours per week

    Pay Rate: $17.86/hour

    Positions Available: Multiple

    Department: Dance, Music, and Theatre

    Overview

    Under supervision, Instructional Student Assistants (ISAs) in this classification perform teaching, grading and/or tutoring duties for the majority of work hours in a given appointment in a given academic department or equivalent administrative unit over the course of an academic term. The work may be performed on-campus or at an off-campus public agency or private non-profit organization under an agreement with a campus in the CSU system.

    Students applying for ISA positions must be admitted or registered as a CSU student. Academic Student Employees may not concurrently hold a faculty or staff position. Students with assignments in more than one student classification (i.e., Teaching Associate, Graduate Assistant, and Student Assistant) are restricted to working a maximum of 20 hours per week during the academic year and up to full-time during academic break periods. The 20 hour per week maximum includes hours worked in all positions.

    Job Duties 

    JOB # 211: Dance, Music, and Theatre: Dance Tutor

    Under the supervision of the instructor, assist in the teaching of dance classes by preparing, demonstrating, and instructing physical dance techniques and by providing occasional tutoring and mentoring to individuals or small groups.

    In addition to class contact hours, Instructional Student Assistants may spend up to one additional hour in:

    1. consultation with the instructor to discuss or plan course content, appropriate pedagogy, and teaching methodology; or
    2. tutoring or mentoring sessions with students.

    Courses that may require Dance ISAs include, but are not limited to: DANC 103, 103T, 104, 104T, 110, 110T, 120, 120T, 241, 243, 245, 247, 303, 310, 320, 320T, 330, 330T, 380, 389, 400, 480, 484, and 485.

    JOB # 163: Dance, Music, and Theatre: Music Grader

    Outside of normal class hours, provide grading assistance for undergraduate Music courses. Depending upon instructor needs and course offerings, assignments may include, but are not limited to: MUS 102, 103, 104, 105, 301, 302, and 305.

    JOB # 274: Dance, Music, and Theatre: Music Tutor

    During normal class hours and scheduled hours outside of class, provide tutoring for students enrolled in undergraduate Music courses. Depending upon instructor needs and course offerings, assignments may include, but are not limited to: MUS 108, 109, 112, 113, 130, 218, 219, 330, 341, 342, 343, 344, and 444

    Minimum Qualifications for this Classification

    Knowledge and Abilities: Instructional Student Assistants must possess the ability to learn and perform assigned work; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; and accept responsibility. Completion of specific coursework may be required in order to teach, grade or tutor a course.

    Special Qualifications: Admission or registration as an Humboldt student is required. On-Campus or Off-Campus Work-Study Instructional Student Assistants must meet the eligibility requirements of the Federal Work-Study Program, as determined by the campus' financial aid office.

    Note: Exceptions to the minimum eligibility qualifications may be granted at the sole discretion of Cal Poly Humboldt.

    Department Hiring Criteria 

    JOB # 211: Dance, Music, and Theatre: Dance Tutor

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION:  Students must have dance skills and discipline-specific knowledge appropriate for the desired assignment. ISAs assigned to DANC 484 should have experience with movement improvisation and teaching elementary school students.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Dance teaching experience is preferred. Hiring preference will be given to Dance Studies majors and upper-division students.

    JOB # 163: Dance, Music, and Theatre: Music Grader

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION:  Applicants must have earned a grade of B- or better in the course to be graded

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Music majors with sophomore standing or higher are preferred

    JOB # 274: Dance, Music, and Theatre: Music Tutor

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION: Applicants must demonstrate knowledge in the area in which they will provide tutoring. Knowledge is typically demonstrated through earning a grade of B- or better in the course(s) in which they will tutor or successful completion of a more advanced course.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Music majors with sophomore standing or higher are preferred.
