Instructional Support Specialist - Transportation - FT (Milford)

Under the general direction and supervision of the Dean, this position combines instructional support, shop operations, and inventory/fleet coordination responsibilities across the Transportation Division. The Instructional Support Specialist supports faculty and instruction across multiple transportation-area classes by helping maintain a safe, organized, and effective hands-on learning environment. This full-time regular position assists students during lab activities, helps instructors manage live work and specialized projects, answers and triages questions in larger lab sections, and supports open lab and apprenticeship activities as needed. The role also coordinates operational needs for the transportation area, including parts and supply ordering, inventory support, and maintenance coordination for fleet vehicles, shop equipment, and instructional labs.

In collaboration with faculty, the Parts Store Manager, the Program Chair, and Physical Plant, this position helps ensure students, instructors, and labs have the materials, equipment, and support necessary for instruction. The position may also provide short-term lab coverage for instructors when needed. As an Instructional Support Specialist, the individual promotes the program and the College through professional interactions with students, faculty, staff, vendors, and community partners while supporting institutional policies, goals, and strategic plans. When instructional activities are reduced or not in session, this position will provide operational support to the Physical Plant team. Responsibilities would include fleet maintenance and other institutional maintenance projects as assigned.

Essential Functions

Primary Duties

  • Support faculty and instruction across multiple transportation-area classes during lab activities, open lab periods, and live work.
  • Aid student learning by answering questions and providing hands-on support during larger lab sections and specialized student projects.
  • Work with apprenticeship students and other learners in open lab settings to reinforce lab procedures, safety practices, and project completion.
  • Assist faculty with live work, shop organization, equipment readiness, and preparation of instructional materials and lab spaces.
  • Provide short-term substitute coverage in the lab when needed to maintain continuity of instruction and student supervision.
  • Order parts and supplies needed for transportation classes, live work, and instructional projects in coordination with faculty, the Parts Store Manager, and the Program Chair.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records for transportation-area parts, materials, tools, and supplies; monitor stock levels and communicate replenishment needs.
  • Organize and coordinate maintenance needs for SCC fleet vehicles, shop equipment, and instructional labs with instructors and Physical Plant as appropriate.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, organized, and fully functional transportation lab environment in compliance with program and College safety expectations.
  • Perform related duties and special projects assigned in support of transportation instruction and operations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Automotive Technology, Diesel Technology, Transportation Technology, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university; or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
  • Two (2) years of experience in transportation, automotive, diesel, heavy equipment, collision, or another closely related technical field.
  • Demonstrated Experience supporting shop, lab, fleet, parts, inventory, or instructional operations in a transportation-related environment.
  • Maintain a valid driver's license and the ability to qualify for auto insurance.
  • Forklift certification or the ability to obtain certification within six months of hire.

$51,566 per year

Benefits

SCC BEN Dollars - Eligible Employees: Full-time status. Regular employees with an FTE of 0.75 or greater will be eligible for SCC Ben Dollars. All employees will be required to elect a health insurance option. If the cost of insurance coverage selected by an employee exceeds the SCC Ben Dollars available, all additional costs will be withheld from the employee's paycheck. Any SCC Ben Dollars that the employee does not elect to use for the purchase of dependent health and dental insurance will be paid to the employee in cash at $0.93 per $1.00 benefit dollar. All amounts paid are subject to withholding for income and employment taxes, but not subject to the College's contribution toward the Retirement Savings Plan - Group Retirement Account (GRA).

Schedule

Normal working hours for this full-time regular position are scheduled between 7:00 a.m.and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, requiring a minimum of a 40-hour work week, based on a 260-day work calendar. Scheduled special activities, emergencies, or temporary schedule changes may require hours outside of the regular workday or workweek.
