Position Summary

The Instructional Technology Coordinator provides strategic leadership for the effective use of instructional technology to enhance teaching, learning, faculty development, student engagement, and academic success. The Coordinator leads the planning, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of instructional technology systems and services, including the Colleges learning management system (LMS), DegreeWorks, instructional technology tools, online and hybrid learning environments, and emerging technologies and programs.

The Instructional Technology Coordinator serves as a key partner to faculty, academic leaders, Information Technology, Student Services, and other campus stakeholders to ensure technology is intentionally integrated into instruction and aligned with institutional priorities, student success goals, accreditation expectations, and workforce needs.

(Continuation of position is contingent upon grant funding)

Salary: Appropriate placement on the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees

Salary Schedule E1, Grade 02

Salary Range $52,707 - $70,896 (12 month, Exempt)

Salary step placement is based on experience per Drake States practice for awarding salary step credits.

Work Hours: 8:00 am - 5:30 pm Monday - Thursday and 8:00 am - 12:00 pm Friday

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Instructional Technology Coordinator shall perform the duties as specified in conformity with policies established by the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees and the J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College Faculty and Staff Handbook.

Instructional Technology Leadership

  • Provide vision and strategic leadership for the Colleges instructional technology initiatives.
  • Develop and implement an instructional technology strategic plan aligned with the Colleges strategic priorities.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend tools that improve teaching, learning, student engagement, and retention.
  • Promote innovative, evidence-based approaches to technology-enhanced instruction.
  • Support the effective integration of artificial intelligence, educational technology, and digital learning tools into curriculum and instruction.
  • Establish standards and best practices for instructional technology use across academic programs.

Learning Management System and Digital Learning

  • Provide leadership for the administration, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Colleges LMS and DegreeWork
  • Coordinate LMS training, support, quality assurance, and faculty adoption.
  • Collaborate with IT and vendors to address system functionality, integrations, security, accessibility, and reliability.
  • Support the development of high-quality online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced courses and programs.
  • Develop and maintain standards for course organization, navigation, accessibility, and instructional design.
  • Monitor emerging trends in online and digital education and recommend improvements.

Faculty Development and Support

  • Develop and deliver professional development opportunities that strengthen faculty members effective use of instructional technology.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops, training sessions, tutorials, communities of practice, and individualized consultations.
  • Partner with faculty to integrate technology into instruction in meaningful ways rather than technology use for its own sake.
  • Support faculty in using data, digital tools, multimedia, AI, and other technologies to improve student learning.
  • Develop resources and training material to increase faculty confidence and digital fluency.

Instructional Design and Course Quality

  • Collaborate with faculty and subject matter experts to design, develop, revise and evaluate online, hybrid, blended, and traditional courses.
  • Promote research-based instructional design practices and student-centered learning.
  • Support the development and review of online and hybrid courses for quality, accessibility, and alignment with learning outcomes.
  • Assist faculty with developing engaging digital content, assessments, multimedia resources, and interactive learning experiences.
  • Ensure that course design support accessibility and universal design principles.

Artificial Intelligence and Innovation

  • Provide leadership in the responsible and effective integration of generative AI and emerging technologies into teaching and learning.
  • Collaborate with faculty and leadership to develop appropriate guidelines and professional development related to AI.
  • Identify opportunities to use AI to improve instructional effectiveness, student engagement, academic support, and operational efficiency.
  • Promote ethical, responsible, equitable, and academically appropriate use of emerging technologies.
  • Monitor developments in instructional technology and make recommendations for institutional innovation.

Student Success and Digital Learning Experience

  • Collaborate with Student Services and academic departments to identify technology barriers affecting student success.
  • Promote an accessible, user-friendly digital learning experience for students.
  • Support initiatives designed to improve student engagement, persistence, completion, and learning outcomes.
  • Use data and feedback to identify opportunities for improving technology-supported learning.
  • Help ensure students have the digital skills and resources needed to succeed in online and technology-enhanced courses.

Assessment, Accreditation, and Continuous Improvement

  • Collaborate with faculty and academic leadership in assessing the effectiveness of instructional technology initiatives.
  • Establish measurable outcomes and key performance indicators for instructional technology services.
  • Collect and analyze data related to technology adoption, faculty engagement, student success, and course quality.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation and evidence supporting institutional effectiveness and accreditation requirements.
  • Participate in institutional planning, assessment, program review, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Works collaboratively with the Presidents Cabinet, Dean of Instruction Associate Dean of Instruction, department chairs, faculty, IT, Student Services, Institutional Effectiveness, and external technology partners.
  • Perform other work-related responsibilities as assigned by the Assistant Dean of Instruction, Dean of Instruction and/or President

Collaboration and Partnerships

  • Work closely with IT to ensure instructional technology systems support academic needs.
  • Collaborate with academic deans, department chairs, faculty, Student Services, Institutional Effectiveness, and other campus units.
  • Establish relationships with technology vendors, professional organizations, and peer institutions.
  • Represent the College at professional conferences, meetings, and technology-related initiatives as appropriate.
  • Perform other work-related responsibilities as assigned by the Associate Dean of Instruction, Dean of Instruction and/or President.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters degree from a regionally accredited institution in instructional technology, educational technology, instructional design, education, information technology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in instructional technology, instructional design, online learning, educational technology, or a related area.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of learning management systems and technology-enhanced instruction.
  • Experience with Quality Matters or another recognized online course quality framework.
  • Demonstrated experience in the effective use of instructional technology.
  • Strong understanding of instructional design, online/hybrid learning, accessibility, and student-centered teaching practices.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in a community college or higher education environment.
  • Experience administering or supporting an LMS.
  • Experience leading institutional technology initiatives.
  • Experience with AI, generative AI, learning analytics, or emerging educational technologies.
  • Experience with faculty professional development and instructional coaching.
  • Knowledge of accreditation expectations related to distance education, instructional quality, assessment, and student learning.

Sick Leave

All regular full-time non-instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is the equivalent of 8 hours of sick leave per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees are allowed to convert unused sick time into service time for the purpose of retirement. Retirement

The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. All regular full-time and part-time employees (non-temporary and non- student) who work at least 20 hours per week are required to participate in The Teachers Retirement System of Alabama.

Tier I - Pays 7.50% monthly. State matches 14.57% (effective 10/01/25)

Health Insurance

PEEHIP, established in 1983, provides health insurance benefits for active and retired education employees and is governed by the PEEHIP Board of Control. The wellness premium applies only to the Blue Cross Blue Shield Hospital Medical Group #14000 plan for non-Medicare eligible active and retired members, non-Medicare-eligible members on LOA or COBRA, and non-Medicare-eligible spouses on active or retired contracts. Refer to the Wellness Program section to learn how you and/or your spouse can receive a wellness premium waiver.

If desired, the employee may elect four options rather than health insurance options to include hospital indemnity, cancer, dental, and vision.

Tuition Assistance

This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.

Employees/Dependents at two-year colleges:

  • 1/3 waived after 1st year
  • 2/3 waived after 2nd year
  • 3/3 waived after 3rd year
