Description

Through leadership by example, provide instruction, administer authentic assessments, and foster an active learning environment that is focused on student foundational competence, success, retention, and completion.

The Adult Basic Education Instructor delivers standards-based instruction in the high school equivalency diploma 5.09 program that supports adult learners in building foundational academic and life skills. This role fosters an engaging, inclusive learning environment focused on student success, retention, and completion. The instructor develops curriculum, uses authentic assessments, provides meaningful feedback, and applies data and technology to support continuous improvement while collaborating with colleagues and stakeholders. The HSED 5.09 program operates as an open-entry model, serving students with a wide range of academic abilities. Courses are offered in a rotating schedule, with new classes beginning every four weeks.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities (include, but not limited to)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and maintain course curriculum. Align curriculum to departmental, state, and/or other applicable standards and outcomes.
  • Plan, deliver and facilitate student learning, including providing ongoing quality feedback to students.
  • Assess student attainment of learning outcomes and critical life skills (both formative and summative), at the course, program, and college level.
  • Collect, report, analyze, and use data to support continuous improvement at the course, program and college level.
  • Use technology to facilitate student learning, college processes, and personal productivity.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participate as a productive member of a team.
  • Maintain college learning resources and equipment.
  • Participate in recruitment and retention activities.
  • Pursue ongoing professional development, maintain occupational competency, and ensure knowledge of current laws and regulations related to the profession(s) in which instruction is provided.

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of programmatic discipline, curriculum development, effective teaching/learning principles, and evaluation
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills - oral, written, active listening, and non-verbal cues
  • Strong customer service skills which includes working with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to manage time, organize work and meet deadlines
  • Ability to effectively integrate technology into instructional delivery and assessment
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with internal (staff, management, personnel) and external contacts (employers, clients, and vendors)
  • Ability to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to work and/or the improvement of processes and/or systems
  • Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and/or with minimal supervision
  • Ability to prioritize work and adapt to changing priorities
  • Intermediate level of proficiency with computer software applications such as word processing, database, spreadsheet, and presentation programs. Knowledge of and familiarity with video-conferencing and technologies associated with adult-centric teaching and learning, as well as within specific programmatic disciplines, which may include web technologies, operating systems, online program tracking platforms, social media platforms, mobile technology tools, and/or AV/multimedia applications and equipment.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Twenty-four months of directly related occupational (teaching) experience.
  • One year of occupational experience must be within the last five years.
  • Masters degree in Education or related field.
  • Attain and maintain a WTCS teaching certificate.

Supplemental Information

The Adult Basic Education Instructor supports the Department of College & Career Readiness and is available to start on August 3rd, 2026.

This position requires Wisconsin residence.

Hours

This is a full-time instructor position on a flexible year-round calendar. Teaching assignments include variable hours, including days, evenings, and/or weekends.

Finalists will be invited to interview and present a teaching demonstration on Friday, July 10th. Candidates will be notified via email if selected for interviews.
