Description

College of The Albemarle welcomes applications from individuals interested in part-time adjunct instructional opportunities in Biology. Adjunct faculty positions are temporary, part-time assignments made on a semester-by-semester basis as instructional needs arise. Adjunct faculty positions are not eligible for employee benefits.

Candidates must be available to teach courses as assigned and may be required to travel within the Colleges service area.

The Part-Time Instructor, Biology is responsible for providing high-quality instruction in biology courses

and laboratories in support of the Colleges mission and educational goals. The instructor promotes

student learning through effective teaching strategies, active engagement, and the use of instructional

technologies that support student success and academic achievement.

The Part-Time Instructor, Biology provides instruction in accordance with approved course outcomes,

departmental standards, accreditation requirements, and College policies and procedures. The position

supports a student-centered learning environment that encourages critical thinking, scientific inquiry,

and lifelong learning.

The Part-Time Instructor, Biology receives general supervision from the Department Chair, Natural

Sciences.

Examples of Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instruction and Student Learning

  • Prepare and deliver classroom, laboratory, hybrid, and/or online instruction in assigned biology courses.

  • Maintain and update course materials that support approved curriculum and student learning outcomes.

  • Utilize a variety of instructional methods, technologies, and learning activities to enhance student engagement and achievement.

  • Foster an inclusive, respectful, and student-centered learning environment.

  • Encourage critical thinking, scientific reasoning, and problem-solving skills.

  • Evaluate and assess student performance through assignments, examinations, laboratory activities, projects, and other instructional methods.

Course Administration

  • Maintain, and update course syllabi in accordance with College and departmental requirements.

  • Maintain accurate and timely records of attendance, grades, and student progress.

  • Utilize the Colleges learning management system and other instructional technologies to support course delivery and communication.

  • Create, maintain, and update course content, assignments, and grades within the Colleges learning management system.

  • Submit grades, reports, and other required documentation in an accurate and timely manner.

  • Adhere to assigned teaching schedules, instructional responsibilities, and workload expectations.

Student Support and Engagement

  • Communicate regularly with students regarding academic performance, course expectations, and progress toward learning outcomes.

  • Provide appropriate academic guidance and refer students to College support services when needed.

  • Respond to student inquiries in a timely and professional manner.

  • Maintain reasonable availability to support student success.

  • Provide letters of recommendation when appropriate and consistent with College practices.

Curriculum and Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain current knowledge within the discipline and instructional best practices.

  • Evaluate instructional materials and recommend updates to textbooks, laboratory resources, and course materials as appropriate.

  • Integrate emerging instructional technologies and teaching strategies when appropriate to enhance student learning.

  • Participate in departmental meetings, training activities, and professional development opportunities as assigned.

  • Support departmental, divisional, and institutional initiatives as appropriate.

  • Adhere to all College policies, procedures, academic regulations, and accreditation requirements.

Laboratory Safety and Compliance

  • Maintain a safe instructional and laboratory environment for students, faculty, and staff.

  • Follow established protocols regarding the storage, handling, and disposal of biological materials, chemicals, and laboratory equipment.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable laboratory safety standards and OSHA requirements.

  • Promote safe laboratory practices among students and monitor adherence to established safety procedures.

Other Duties

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Required

  • Masters degree in Biology from a regionally accredited college or university; or Masters degree in a closely related discipline with at least eighteen (18) graduate semester hours in Biology from a regionally accredited college or university.

  • Commitment to student success and student-centered instruction.

  • Ability to teach effectively in a comprehensive community college environment.

Preferred

  • Two (2) years of post-secondary teaching experience.

  • Experience teaching laboratory-based biology courses.

  • Experience teaching online, hybrid, or technology-enhanced courses.

  • Experience utilizing learning management systems (LMS) such as MyCourses, Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, or similar platforms for course delivery, communication, grading, and student engagement.

  • Experience incorporating instructional technology and digital learning resources into course delivery.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of

  • Principles and practices of effective college instruction.

  • Biology concepts, laboratory procedures, and scientific methodologies relevant to assigned courses.

  • Community college philosophy, mission, and student population.

  • Student learning outcomes assessment and instructional effectiveness.

  • Laboratory safety practices and applicable OSHA requirements.

  • Learning management systems, instructional technologies, and web-based educational resources.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in classroom, laboratory, clinical simulation (if applicable), and online instructional environments. The position requires standing, walking, speaking, and demonstrating laboratory procedures for extended periods. The instructor may be required to handle laboratory materials and equipment and must adhere to established safety protocols.

Evening, weekend, online, and off-campus instructional assignments may be required based on institutional needs and course scheduling. Instructional assignments are contingent upon enrollment, program needs, funding availability, and administrative approval.
