Duties

Help

As a Instructor (Chemistry Laboratory), you will:

  • Present relevant chemistry concepts in the pre-lab lecture, checking of students execution of experiments, preliminary evaluation of students experimental data and grading lab reports submitted by students.
  • Serve as the Property Custodian for the Department and is required to keep an up-to-date inventory of equipment, supplies, spare parts, and maintenance needs for chemistry and physics.
  • Be responsible for the reliability, the precise calibration, and the technical operations of all equipment used in the physics and chemistry laboratories and in demonstrations that require periodic testing and calibration.

The ideal candidate for this position is a hands-on technical professional who combines expertise in laboratory operations with strong instructional skills to support the Department of Mathematics and Science at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.
  • TRIAL PERIOD: This is an Excepted Service position. This job will be filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive service. Applicants selected for an excepted service position may be subject to a two-year trial period.

As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you may be required to serve a 2-year trial period during which we will evaluate your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, we may consider:

  • your performance and conduct;
  • the needs and interests of the agency;

  • whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.

Upon completion of your 2 year trial period, your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must (1) meet the Education Requirement for the series, (2) provide a copy of transcripts for verification, AND (3) meet either the education or experience qualifications for the grade at which you are requesting consideration.

To qualify for the GS-00 (Instructor (Chemistry Laboratory) you:

  • Must possess a minimum of a Masters degree from an accredited college or university in Chemistry or a closely related chemistry field including, but not limited to, Chemistry or Biochemistry.
  • Must possess a minimum of one year full-time experience tutoring for or teaching freshman-level Chemistry courses in a college or university, other than as a part of teaching assistantship.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  • Chemistry - Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of the composition, structure, and properties of substances, and of the chemical processes and transformations, including uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.
  • Teaching Others - Helps others learn through formal or informal methods; identifies training needs; provides constructive feedback; coaches others on how to perform tasks; acts as a mentor.
  • Research - Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry; including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; and the reporting of results.

For all types of consideration, experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience

Individual Occupational Requirements

Basic Requirements:

  • Degree: Physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

OR

  • Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
