Under limited supervision, the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Instructor is responsible for the planning, delivery, assessment, and continuous improvement of classroom, laboratory, simulation, online, clinical, and/or field instruction within the EMS program. The instructor supports the Clinical Coordinator with student onboarding, preceptor and Field Training Officer orientation, documentation review, student-progress monitoring, and other clinical or field education activities as assigned.

What Youll Do

• Develops and delivers evidence-informed instruction in accordance with approved course objectives, curriculum standards, medical direction, and applicable EMS education requirements.
• Incorporates current National EMS Education Standards, evidence-informed clinical practice, local protocols, and emerging trends in EMS into instructional activities, as appropriate.
• Prepares and maintains current syllabi, lesson plans, course schedules, instructional materials, and student-learning activities for assigned courses.
• Identifies students requiring remediation and develops or implements appropriate remediation plans in coordination with program leadership.
• Maintains accurate documentation of student attendance, grades, competencies, patient contacts, clinical performance, field performance, and other required outcomes.
• Supports student retention, progression, completion, credentialing eligibility, and transition into the EMS workforce.
• Participates in program evaluation, outcomes assessment, continuous quality improvement, accreditation activities, and corrective-action initiatives.
• Recommends educational equipment, supplies, technology, and other resources needed to meet instructional and program objectives.
• Assists with laboratory and simulation preparation, inventory, inspection, cleaning, and maintenance.
• Provides clinical and field instruction, supervision, student evaluation, and remediation when assigned.
• Promptly reports student-performance concerns, safety events, documentation discrepancies, or potential policy violations to the Clinical Coordinator and Director of EMS.
• Assists the Clinical Coordinator with student onboarding, preceptor and Field Training Officer orientation, documentation review, student-progress monitoring, and other clinical or field education activities as assigned.
• Maintains all credentials, approvals, certifications, and professional-development requirements associated with the position.
• Remains current in EMS clinical practice, instructional methodology, educational technology, regulatory requirements, and evidence-informed prehospital care.
• Performs other related duties as assigned to meet the needs of the program, division, and College.

What We Are Looking For

Minimum Qualifications

• Associate degree in Emergency Medical Services, Healthcare, Education or closely related field; OR an Associate degree with documented education and experience directly related to the position; OR the ability to complete the required Associate degree within six (6) months of employment.
• Current, unrestricted, NC Paramedic credential, or the ability to obtain NC credentialing through legal reciprocity within 30 days of employment.
• At least three (3) years of experience providing prehospital care at the Paramedic level.
• NC OEMS Level I Instructor credential, at the Paramedic level; OR eligibility and ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment.
• Ability to obtain approval or credentialing through the Pitt County Program Medical Director within three (3) months of employment.
• Documented experience providing EMS, healthcare, or public-safety education and/or training.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelors degree in Emergency Medical Services, Healthcare, Education or related field.
• National Registry Paramedic certification
• Current AHA BLS, ACLS, and PALS Instructor credentials
• Current NAEMT or other nationally recognized EMS specialty-course instructor credentials
• Experience teaching in a community college or accredited Paramedic education program
• Experience with online, hybrid, simulation-based, clinical, or field instruction
• Experience as a clinical preceptor, Field Training Officer, or field internship preceptor
• Documented experience with student remediation, competency validation, clinical documentation, or continuous quality improvement.
• At least 100 documented hours of EMS instruction in initial education, continuing education, clinical education, or field education at the Advance Life Support level.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Demonstrated knowledge of EMS instructional methodology, student assessment, remediation, and competency evaluation.
• Ability to use instructional technology, electronic student-tracking systems, and learning management systems.
• Effective oral, written, interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include daytime, evening, weekend, online, off-campus, clinical, and field assignments.
• Demonstrates professionalism, integrity, accountability, dependability, respect, and a commitment to equitable and student-centered education.
• Ability to comply with PCC policies, NCCCS requirements, NCOEMS rules and educational standards, applicable clinical-affiliate requirements, and CoAEMSP/CAAHEP standards when applicable.
• Ability to maintain an effective and collaborative relationships with clinical preceptors, field supervisors, Field Training Officers, employers, and other program partners.

Additional Information

Work Environment: Work is performed in a combination of classroom, laboratory, simulation, office, clinical, field, and online learning environments. Responsibilities require regular interaction with students, faculty, clinical affiliates, emergency response agencies, healthcare providers, and community partners. Instruction may occur on campus, at affiliated hospitals and healthcare facilities, EMS agencies, fire departments, public safety training sites, or other approved off-campus locations. The position requires travel between instructional sites and participation in clinical and field education activities. The work environment includes exposure to simulated and real patient care settings, emergency vehicles, medical equipment, bodily fluids, infectious diseases, hazardous materials, and other conditions commonly encountered in emergency medical services. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and established infection-control and safety procedures must be followed at all times.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position:

• Requires a combination of sedentary, standing, walking, and physically active duties; must be able to demonstrate EMS skills and patient care techniques; move throughout classrooms, laboratories, simulation environments, clinical sites, and field locations; and assist with the setup, operation, cleaning, and maintenance of instructional equipment and simulation resources.
• Requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull instructional equipment, medical supplies, and simulation manikins weighing up to approximately 50 pounds independently and greater weights with assistance when appropriate.
• Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, climbing, and repetitive hand movements may be required during skills instruction and demonstrations.
• Must possess sufficient visual, auditory, and manual dexterity to assess student performance, operate medical and instructional equipment, perform EMS procedures, and communicate effectively in classroom, clinical, and emergency-response environments.
• Occasional exposure to stressful or emergency situations requiring rapid decision-making and sustained concentration should be expected.

Normal Working Hours: Varied Schedule; Generally operates on a flexible schedule based on instructional assignments and program needs. Work may include daytime, evening, weekend, and occasional holiday hours. Instructional responsibilities may include classroom, laboratory, simulation, online, clinical, and field education, requiring travel to affiliated agencies and clinical sites. Additional hours may be required to support student remediation, clinical visits, simulation activities, accreditation efforts, curriculum development, program events, professional development, and other college or community outreach activities. Schedule flexibility is essential to accommodate the operational needs of the EMS program and its clinical and field partners.
